Has this happened to anyone here. I just clicked on someone’s C&F internet aim and up popped and internet alert. It said that anyone could access information from my computer (ex. credit card numbers). That happened to someone I work with.

Are you using a firewall?
what’s a fire wall? Is it possible for someone to intercept info from my computer? Where does an internet alert come from?

If you don’t know what a firewall is then my guess is that you probably are not using one. The alert you are getting is probably just a general warning from your computer to let you know that you are going to a non-secure site and to be careful what information you are giving out.
When I do maintenence to my website I always get a security warning and clicking on the more info button gives the following information:
Downloading non-secure content from a secure Web site
The Web site you are viewing is a secure site. It uses a security protocol such as SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) or PCT (Private Communications Technology) to secure the information you send and receive.
When sites use a security protocol, information that you provide, such as your name or credit-card number, is encrypted so that other people can’t read it. However, this Web page also contains items that do not use this secure protocol.
Given what you know about this Web site and your computer, you must decide whether to continue working with this site.
If you do not feel confident about working with this site, click No.

Skipper, what you got was an advertisement. These pop-up ad’s can be most annoying and the one you got is using typically attention getting language, trying to get you to click on it and go to the advertisers website.
Do what I do - ignore them and close them as soon as they appear. - Joel
Yes, that’s a pop up ad. When you get a message like that, if it is in a browser window, it’s an ad. You are unlikely to get a valid popup like that in windows, to my knowledge.
Another varient is a message saying your system is prone to viruses - another ad.
Generally these ads are linked images, meaning you can click anywhere on it (rather than just the OK) and get pulled to the ad source. So if you put your mouse over the ad and it turns to the little pointing finger, it’s an ad. Use your favorite expletive and close the window.

As a computer professional (yes I get paid to do it) I use Pop Up Stopper, downloadable for free from http://www.panicware.com
Also, Opera, the world’s fastest browser, has a build in popup stopper. You can download a free version of Opera but it has an ad banner. The paid for version does not.

The banner ad in opera is pretty unobtrusive. I use opera for my mail client on windows too.
The only downside to using opera is that you don’t get microsoft’s wonderful Virus Propogation Technology. Oh well.
