OT: Happy Mother's Day!

Hope all the rest of you moms out there are having a great day too!

Redwolf

Yes, we are!!!
Lolly

We had a nice surprise after church today. We came out and the Sunday School class had covered the steps and the sidewalk with Mother’s Day greetings in several languages, flowers, butterflies and rainbows, in colored chalk . The EYC had planned the coffee hour, and there were chocolate-dipped strawberries for all the moms.

Redwolf

Ahhhh yes, mothers day!

Woke up to the statuatory fight as the children struggled to make breakfast.

20 min later my 3 kids and their 2 friends file into my room proudly bearing my Breakfast. (Herds of Buffalo have been know to be quieter!)

This year instead of looking surprised, I quickly pad my bed with pillows and hide out of site. My 15 yr old son calls out: HAPPY MOTHERS DAY!!!" No reply. His brows knott up as he aproaches my bed and gently pokes the unmoving form. I jump out from behind the door. “BOOOO!!”

They laugh and I climb back in and await my feast.

What have we this year? I sigh with relief as I see they have abandoned the usual half buttered, rock hard toast. Nowhere to hide it anyway.

My 17 year old daughter proudly presents me with a plate of butter and syrup. Megan, 11 hands me a plate with eggs and pancakes. Her fried a cup of tea and someone tosses an unsigned homemade card on the bed. I am baffled, who is it from? The hand writing is too good to be my son’s, the spelling too good to be my daughter…I set aside the mystery and eye the breakfast up cautiously. (17 yrs of Mothersday breakfasts will do this to you.) Children concentrate more on presentation then anything else and this looked good… Tabi 17 tells me not to look at the underside of the pancakes. Megan proudly tells me she made the eggs. The 11 yr old guest watches proudly as I take my first sip of luke warm tea. My face contorts.

“How is it?” she askes. " I made it!"

I take a deep breath. There are about 4 spoons of sugar in the tea. “How about you put more milk in” I ask sweetly. (better to have cold tea than drink sugar…) She gladly takes the cup and runs into the kitchen. I take the flowers and homemade vases and reverently put them on my window sill and tackle the eggs. Fortunatly my audience has retreated to the living room and I am alone. The eggs are stone cold and still very slimmy. The pancakes cold but tasty with the added chocolate chips. They must have run out of syrup because the stuff in the pot is decidedly runny, mostly sugar water.

I turn back to the eggs. If I dip the pancakes in them I won’t notice the slime as much so now with a plan I tackle breakfast. A glass of orange juice arrives and I use it to wash down the tea and eggs. More plants, cards and an IOU for a chocolate bar.

15 minutes later it is all over. A knock on the door and 2 kids want a ride and I am suddenly Mom again.

Mothers day is a wonderful time to be remembered by your childeren and all the sacrifices you make all year long, and ironically the biggest sacrifice of all often comes when you eat a carefully prepared meal in the presence of wide eyed children at the foot of your bed. When it is all over they go back to their lives happy that you are there mom and you happy that they are your children.

My daughter’s Mother’s Day poem for me last year:

MOM

You are as pretty as a model in a pretty dress,
Nice as a kitten,
Sweet as an ice cream sundae,
Smart as Einstein
And as cool as Tony Hawk!
You make me feel good,
You are da bomb,
You are awesome.
Computer: $1000
Mommy: Priceless.
There are some things money can’t buy.
For everything else, there’s MasterCard.

(Think maybe she watches a bit much TV? )

P.S. Sandy…I haven’t endured the breakfast yet. Maybe I’ll let it be known that I love lasagne for breakfast…she does make a pretty good lasagne!

Redwolf, I love that poem! It’s brilliant! Your child has a gift.

And Sandy, that breakfast story had me in stitches. It’s like something from an Erma Bombeck column.

Waldski, great cartoon, as usual.

I had to work night and day this Mother’s Day, though I did get out to have breakfast with my wife and sons, and spoke to my mother on the phone. I was feeling kind of bad, and this thread just lightened my mood considerably.

Thanks to all, and Happy Mother’s Day!
