So many of you gave me such good advice on which guitar to buy, I thought I would ask for your opinions on websites and books for learning to play.
I had learned to play chords on my old guitar that burned up 11 years ago, but that was all the farther I got with it (I am also re-learning those chords and more). What I really want to learn is how to pick. I am currently using a book called “Teach Yourself To Play Guitar” written by Morty and Ron Manus, published by Alfred. Is there any advice or tips you can give me to help make this process go easier or faster?
I am dealing with the sore fingers right now. I have no real callous’s yet. I have been dividing my time between playing the Whistle, My hammered dulcimer and my new guitar. Not enough hours in the day!!!
By the way, if you missed it on the other thread back in December. I ended up buying the Seagull M6 acoustic. I love the sound and the feel of it and am having a great time learning to play it.
I think the word is scales.
You need to train your hand and mind to work together to land on the right note. Repetition is the only way I have been able to learn this. Any evening I watch TV I also have the guitar in my hand and a music stand at my side. Either doing scales or picking simple songs, started playing my whistle tunes the airs are the easiest and then started taking lessons with Mary Coogan of Cherish the Ladies and she has been notating some simple finger picking tunes. The biggest challenge I am finding is learning the fret board and moving beyond the basic first position.
One place you could start is the Acoustic Guitar magazine web site. They have a lot of information and a bulletin board there. There are some free lessons and ads for their books.

This is an excellent suggestion. Also, once you are there, go to their message boards. They have separate boards for everything from gear to trading to a beginners forum. Their boards are the other place I spend my time on the net.
Another vote for the Acoustic Guitar Forum. All the people who post are really, really, nice. They’ve got a slightly more comprehesive breakdown of topics, so you’re sure to find exactly what you’re looking for.
I spend as much time there as I do here.

I think that is the direction this book is taking me. I have learned 3 notes on the bottom string and 3 notes on the 2nd string. It sounds like a scale is starting to happen. I hope.
