This seems like this shouldn’t be legal, but if you go to http://www.google.com and type in a phone number (like 9165551212), it will tell you who the phone is registered to, where they live and even offer you a map. You have the chance to remove your number from this directory.
Am I the only one that finds this disturbing? I know that these directories have existed for ages, but I thought they were only available to a limited number of agencies, i.e. law enforcement. Silly me.

Nope, there are yellow and white pages galore out there. Most charge a fee, some do not. We were able to find my sister in law and her husbands address this way. Pieced it together from several sites.
Do a search on White Pages or People search and see what comes up!

My parents’ number does not come up, I think because they have always specified not to be listed in the phone book.

My number doesn’t come up because I’ve chosen to be both “unlisted” and “unpublished.” I don’t know if it’s the same in all states, but you have to request both in Texas to prevent your number from being available in both the phone book and through directory assistance.

If you go to Google and just use their regular search it will turn up.
I dunno, I guess it just rubs me the wrong way to have the phone company default to giving all your information away. Then, it costs extra money to have your number unlisted. I can see the value to business phones, but not residential phones. Everybody can get my info but I can’t even find out who these vicious tele-marketers are that keep calling and hanging up on me as soon as I say, “Please remove…”

Well. I believe Google will let you remove it.
It really isn’t that big a deal. Commercially available reverse directories have been around for years. Its really not that different from being able to start from a person’s name and find the same stuff.
I’m beginning to think that if you have expectations of total privacy, move to Montana, don’t get a phone and don’t go online.
I tried our number and only got info about a foot race in some city.

I remember that feature, and use it sometimes, but It only sort of works sometimes… must be updated rather irregularly. came up with my OLD number of about 6 months ago. I had it changed about that time. Doesn’t have my new number listed at all.
When you do type in my old number, it does show up, but the address comes up wrong! 
right street and all, just the wrong street address!! I feel sorry for the poor bastard up the road when the Feds come to get him in the middle of the night with his jammies on!!

My ISp is comcast high speed and they have a similar feature. There also other sites that have reverse lookup services. You can’t kill the all.
