Visited the Lake District in 85. Hiked up to “Tarn Hows(?)” I think. Windermere seemed to suffer from traffic congestion, like a mini-Lake Tahoe. had great local sausage with the fried breakfast. mm.

Although we have great trees in California (like redwoods etc), there is a majesty of the broadleafs in England and I will never forget one such tree on that hike that day.

It was rooted so strongly in the soil that it looked like it was holding up the sky. The intermittent rain, I guess, makes the trees very healthy.

In California, the trees have to hang on for months and months between rains and they looked a bit stressed sometimes.

Hope to visit up there again someday, rbm.

Magic place. especially off-season (but there, which escapes this ?).

Tarn Hows is about 2 miles from my office and I look out on to The Old Man of Coniston, If I look out the other side I can See Coniston Lake Where Donald Campbell was lost attempting the world water speed record.

  • must dash have a whistle to catch!
