Hospital staff ordered to show eight teeth when smiling

A Chinese hospital has ordered staff to smile widely at patients, so at least eight teeth are showing.

Doctors and nurses at Chongqing hospital have challenged why they need to smile so widely.

But the Hong Kong edition of China Daily, quoting the Chongqing Evening News, says complaints against staff have dropped from two or three a month to zero since the new rule took effect.

The eight-teeth rule was brought in by patient admissions department director Huang who argued it was “a vivid metaphor for better service”.

In Canada we have been ordered not to smile or make any kind of face when having our passport pictures taken for the new high tech gizmo passports coming out to theatre near you.

All the better to scan the face by hidden digital cameras.

What is amazing is they had only 2-3 complaints a month before the smiling initiative.

Well, depending on which 8 teeth they’re showing, it could be kind of a scary effect - I’d be somewhat intimidated if I was dealing with someone who was obviously annoyed, but continued to show 8 teeth in their smile!
No wonder complaint levels have dropped!

Any eight teeth? Like four on the left top and four on the right bottom? Or worse, one on the top and seven on the bottom?

Do they have to be all your own teeth? Could I, like, grin and then pull a box out of my pocket with some extra toothage to make up the difference?

Why 8 teeth? Some Confucian numerolgical significane? Did someone whip out the I Ching for that 'un?

Old-fashioned Chinese smiles will do me just fine. Now if saw eight teeth, I’d strongly suspect I was being laughed at. :laughing:

BTW, I thought that showing the bottom set of teeth when smiling was a trick reserved for American sit coms.
