OT: Cell Phones

My Bishop had his cell phone in his pocket and somehow pushed the speed dial for my home. It’s scary that I’m on his speed dial. But more strange was to listen to the conversation without anyone knowing. It was somewhat muffled but I recognized some names.
Let’s hear your cell phone stories.

It was approaching St. Patrick’s Day when at a session a local TV crew were filming us for a real-time broadcast…spirit of the season, and all that. My cell phone was off. As I was leaving, I turned it back on to check a voice message: “Jason! Jason! You’re on TV, dude! Check it out!”

Not exactly a cell phone story; the pastor of a large church in our community forgot to turn off his FM mike when he visited the men’s room between services.

How about cell phone peeves? Clods who don’t turn off their cell phones at the theater, church, plays, etc.

ROFL!

Hilarious.

Another church PA story –

Many years ago I attended a church that had a fairly lousy PA that would pick up signals from nearby CB transmitters. One of the deacons had a CB radio in his pickup. His son and his friends wondered why they got caught every time they snuck out of church to go play on the CB…

I once was talking to a co-worker who was at a customer site when he dropped his cell phone in the toilet. That was a really strange sound. At least I knew he was doing his best thinking at the time.

I accidentally left my cell phone on during a show once.

I didn’t think about it until during the second set when it went off. I have a tendency to do strange things onstage anyways. (I was once at this bar that doesn’t serve food, and a party brought in a platter of sushi for some reason. They offered the band some out of the kindness of their hearts. I just brought up one of the girls onstage from the party in the middle of a song and had her feed me some. I was amazed that it worked myself. Granted, I missed my solo, but it was worth it)

I figured at this point there was no reason to hide the fact that my cell phone was ringing, so I answered it. It was actually another bar looking for a band. I thought it would be bad taste to book a gig while at another, so I said I’d call him back.

My pants called 911 once. It turned out that if you press and hold the 9 key it would automatically dial 911. So, I’m sitting in my office with my cell phone in my trousers pocket and something else in my pocket pressed the 9. After after a minute or so the phone rings and it’s the 911 operator wanting to know what my emergency was. I told her it wasn’t me that called and she insisted and then I figured it out and told her it was a problem with my pants. She was not amused.

Seth, Did you book the job?

These are great, keep them coming. How about other funny stories? I mean it’s off topic anyways.

I was once in a lengthy meeting that was interrupted when a secretary walked in to tell us that she had to step out of the building. “Can someone keep an ear out for the phone in the room across the hall and run over to answer it if it rings?” she pleaded. “Sure,” said Christina, the character also known as the biggest practical joker on the staff.

Ten minutes later I glanced under the table at my cell phone and called the office #. Chris jumped up to race across the hall and answer the phone, and I hung up the second she picked it up. We could all hear her saying, “Hello…Hello…Hello?!” Of course, the second her butt landed on her seat back in the meeting, I redialled. Again, the sprint across the hall, the multiple Hello thing, and, before her frustrated return, I showed everyone else the phone on my lap. And so, to make a long story even longer, the moment she sat down, I redialled. Sprint. HELLO! HELLO! OH, @#$%!!!

She spent the next thirty minutes parked across the hall with her hand poised on the phone waiting for it to ring. And it felt wonderful to hit the redial button, just one more time, the moment she returned. She freaked out. The rest of us roared with laughter. I asked her if she wanted to check out the list of preset numbers on my new cell phone, and when she figured out the source of the calls, she simply smiled and vowed revenge. I spent the next three years awaiting a response, but it never came. She now works in Thailand. I can sleep at night

Jon, the more I think about it, it is pretty odd to consider that you’d be on your bishop’s speed dial. :boggle:

I know it’s spooky.

Umm…you’re not a lawyer, are you?

Sorry. I have impulse control issues.

-Mine in shirt pocket has dialed my sweetheart’s answering machine while I’m driving transit, leaving long road-noise filled passages
interspersed with “$1.25 please.” , “Yes, this bus labelled “To Downtown”
does in fact go downtown.” and “Here’s your transfer.”
-Good thing I don’t chat up other women or swear much.

A local church got a brand new PA system. Unfortunately it wasn’t grounded properly. A friend of mine lived about a block away. He is an amateur radio operator, a ham, with a very powerful transmitter. On Sunday morning he began to call “CQ DX CQ DX”. It emptied the church as they all began to “seek you de exit”.

Nano, just a sign painter.

“Just”? Anyone who’s tried to save drachmas by doing their own signage knows that only a skilled sign painter can deliver the goods. The result otherwise usually looks as cheap as the person who painted it. Give yourself some credit, Jon!

And now, back to your scheduled program.

For about two weeks I was getting calls from a number I didn’t know. I finally called the number that was calling me, and the woman told me that my number was her son-in-laws’ number, which was impossible. Two more times the same person called me, and when I answered, said to the person with them, “See..” After that, the calls ceased.

I’ve had the same cell phone number for about four years. Every couple of months I’ll turn it on to discover a missed call from a number I don’t recognize. Because the main reason I have a cell phone is in case an emergency arises with my husband or daughter, I always return missed calls. Inevitably, however, the call is from someone who speaks no English (I really need to learn the Spanish for “you dialed my cell phone by mistake” one of these days).

As far as PA systems go, our rector used to tell a story about a priest who was leading a service in a New York cathedral. He stood up at the end of the processional, started the greeting, and realized his mic wasn’t working. “I think something is wrong with the microphone,” he said aloud, not realizing that, in the huge cathedral, the congregation couldn’t hear him at all. They saw his mouth move, however, and being well-trained Episcopalians, they responded with “And also with you.”
