OS Chieftain in B..

I just made an experimental whistle body for one of my D whistles that Phil owns and told him to surprise me with something in return.
A couple of days ago I received one of his Old Style Chieftain whistles in the key of B. Odd key, but this is a really nice whistle. For one thing, my fingers sort of naturally fall on the fingerholes in a nice relaxed position, so it’s really easy to finger. The bottom register is rock solid with lots of juicy overtones. The upper register takes a tad more oomph in the breath but comes out easily once you get used to it. I really like the mid-range whistles-- not high and shrill, but not as hard to finger as the real low ones. LIke all metal whistles, this one benefits from a good warming up. I also did the detergent in the windway trick which virtually eliminated clogging.
Phil tells me that the closest he makes these days is a Bb, but I’ll bet that’s a nice whistle too. Give a listen on his website..

What is the detergent in the windway trick? I have a Chieftian and it seems to clog.

A couple of drops of liquid dishwashing soap like Dawn in a few ounces of water. Dribble some of this through the windway, then shake out the excess. Some people recommend letting it dry before you play the whistle, but I never do. Other people use Jet Dry (used in dishwashing machines) in the same way. Also, with a Chieftain or other metal headed whistle, be sure to warm it up well before playing-- a cold whistle will condense moisture from your breath.

I think the detergent is supposed to act as an anti-surfactant, that is, the liquid from your mouth will keep running down instead of forming beads and clogging the whistle. I do this too, although I don’t know if it helps. I think it also helps to keep the inside of the mouthpiece clean. I just blow it out a couple of times after dripping the detergent solution in.

Thanks I will try that. Is it put in through the fipple - where one would blow through. If nothing else maybe I could blow bubbles and play Lawrence Welk music.

If you don’t like the taste of soap or Jet Dry, try Duponol (though it IS something recorder players use!)…I find it to be pretty tasteless (just like recorder players! )
