Several years ago, I worked in a Japanese high school where many of the students had had serious diseases during junior high.
On a couple of occasions the kids had relapses, and while they were in hospital the whole school would spend their morning registration periods folding cranes.
Thousands of cranes linked together is a very palpaple expression of the feelings of a large group of people, and it is simply a beautiful sight to see.

Another animal reputed to live a thousand years, and often linked with the crane, in mythology and symbolism, as an emblem of good fortune is the tortoise.

I have some marbled-colored construction paper. Would this work for origami? For somebody who’s never made an origami before, what would you reccomend me make, other than a paper airplane?

Construction paper might work for a few things, but usually, it’s too thick and tears too easily for origami. That said, I have used marbled construction paper for origami, to nice effect.
The cicada (in Oklahomanese, we call these locusts) is the one I usually recommend as a first, as it doesn’t contain any complicated folds: http://members.aol.com/davidpetty/mom10.htm
