On hot cars and wooden whistles.

Not a good idea to leave wooden instruments in the car. Well, we all know that. Just thought I’d mention it. Wax can melt… even if it’s not an especially hot day… y’know… just if it’s sunny… just for example… you left it just long enough to go in and eat a meal at a buffet restaurant. It could be all melty when you came back out… y’know, just for example.

In my Care and Feeding of Wooden Whistles brochure that I send out with each wooden whistle, keeping them out of extreme heat is like the first thing I mention.

Which is precisely why I have two Busman whistles: wood for home and Delrin for travel. I’m curious, though. For those of you who travel with wooden whistles (or wooden flutes, pipes, etc.), what precautions do you take? The air on airplanes is usually extremely dry, and the climate at your destination may be quite different from where you started. If you’re going to be there for a long time, you can acclimate the instrument slowly, but what if you’re only visiting for a day or two and need to play the instrument?

I’ve read many similar warnings about leaving Recorders-especially parafin wax treated Maple Recorders in hot cars;the wax melts out of them.
Then again,this type of heat induced Recorder torture might give certain posters evil thoughts!

I don’t take my wooden whistles on trips since I have a set of Water Weasels. However, I have taken my boxwood flute all sorts of places. I just got back from a car trip; the only pain about that is that, unlike Walden, I brought it with me even on pee breaks. I’ve brought it to Europe and to the desert in California with no ill effects.

That said, I should be getting a polymer travel flute within the next couple of days. It’s partly the road-trip issue, but also the “what if some overzealous airport security person confiscates it” issue. That’s never happened to me, but I’d just die if someone tried to confiscate my beloved Bleazey flute.
