I’m stuck at my father’s house for a few days while he is in the hospital. I am using his old Windows 98 computer. I am pulling my hair out, what little I have left. The computer is soooooo slow that I can hardly stand it. It enjoys locking up if I ask it to work a little bit. The label on the computer proudly mentions the “spacious 4 GB hard drive”. Yet, the computer is better than the old computers that I was using in college before windows became popular. Everything about my father’s computer feels old. I am so spoiled.
You want slow? I have a Commodore 64 stashed away in the garage.
My computer is perhaps eight months newer than the one described in the original post. Mine has a 8 gb hard drive and I did expand the memory from 64 mb to 128 mb. Once in a while I think about upgrading to a new system, but it is mostly games that need the extra horse power. I still run Office 95 and it does 90% of what I need to do. For many computers, it is more commonly the Internet connection, dialup vs. broadband, that is the bottleneck, than the processor.
Commodore 64s have one huge advantage over new computers–INSTANT ON–as soon as the switch is flipped it is ready to go. Imagine that. The old Apple I’s are now collectable. I doubt the Commodore’s ever will be because of the relatively large number produced. I’m sure a few hobbyists will keep a few running.
Hey, maybe a new computer would make a nice Father’s Day present. Dell often has specials under $400. I read about the latest promotions at the techbargains site.
