OLD Clarke whistle needs tuning

Hi! I am new to this group but already like it and have managed to acquire WhOA in 4 months.
I also play bamboo or piccolo type flutes in addition to the whistle.
Ok, my question is this - I have an old Clarke whistle in ‘C’. I have had it for years and suspect it to be at least 20 years old. It was given to me as a child, and so I played with it, mostly as a wand (as a kid I never got past the high piched sound it made by blowing really really hard - for some reason I thought that if you blow harder it would sound better - so my parents did not like for me to play it while they were home  ). It has gotten a bit beat up and the paint is worn off in some spots, but it still plays. However, it is now off key - a bit sharp. And on some notes, if you don’t blow soft enough, there is a kind of internal rattle.
This is the old metal tube type whistle with a wooden plug stuck in the end. Is there anyway to tune this whistle? Now that I am an addict, I would like to have it working.
If it is not fixable, I would be interested in finding it a new home with someone who just wants to add it to a collection or something.
Thanks! :stuck_out_tongue:

Hard to Blow a Clarke C softly.

Could the plug be at all loose, due to drying out?

Otherwise, I don’t think Clarke’s can be tuned.

good luck, Martin

I don’t think the plug is loose. On second thought the ‘rattle’ seems to be more of an internal roughness and is really really hollow sounding.
This Clark has the dimonds on the holes instead of between them. I can post a photo if anyone wants.

The original Clarkes can’t really be tuned, but you should be able to get rid of the buzzing sound by playing with the windway height and the blade position. Make sure the windway isn’t squashed down too low, and try raising the blade up and down to see if the sound improves.
