I’m a new whistler been at it about 2 weeks and my clarke sweet-tone D is going downhill, my C note never sounded that great but it is just about done for and I think I want to get a new whistle. whats my best bet for around $50 that will just be a solid all around beginners whistle and what kind of wait would I be looking at…the shorter the better because like I said my clarke is almost un-playable right now…thanks for any information.

I think a tunable Dixon would be a good bet. If you want to spend a little more, I would recommend a Water Weasel. It’s louder that the Dixon, but not unpleasantly loud. Check out http://www.thewhistleshop.com for availability.

You might also want to email them, because some of the whistle pages haven’t been updated. I recently ordered a Dixon D with the brass tuning slide, which appeared to be available, whereas the page on which the standard tuneable appeared said they were out of stock. Actually, the reverse was true…they had the standard tuneables in stock, but not the ones with the brass tuning slide (they offered to substitute the standard tuneable, but since I particularly like the look of the other, I opted to wait for it). If time (or a particular model) is an issue, it might be worth dropping them an email query about availability before ordering.
If 'twere I, I’d lower my sights to a nifty little Susato Dublin VSB and begin saving my pennies for a Burke. A tempting alternative would be to bite the bullet and get the Burke right away, since for me this acquisition would be inevitable anyway.
Hang on to that Sweetone… I can’t imagine why it would be “going downhill”-- and in only 2 weeks! Make sure the windway is clean, with not pocket lint or other similar debris in it. It should still play just fine.

I guess the only real problem with it is the C is pretty flat and weak/raspy…same whether I crossfinger it or just half cover the first hole.
