I just got an O’Grady half set, which is very nice indeed. My only complaint with it has to do with the block for the f key. It is right where my bottom hand thumb goes and is an odd enough shape to be rather uncomfortable when playing if I place my thumb on it. I’ve tried placing my thumb above it, but the space between the block and the c key is a bit small, and below it seems awkward. I do recall reading some comments about this on a forum once in the past but can’t seem to locate them. Does anyone have any suggestions for modifications, either to the chanter or to how I might hold it? Thanks.
Maybe it’s a matter of getting used to?
Give it a few days, if it still bugs you, have it “flattened out” by the maker or someone who knows how to handle it.
I’ve seen a NOG chanter with the block grooved or scalloped to allow the thumb to rest comfortably. I don’t know if NOG did this or whether it was the piper, but my guess is that it was NOG.
Grind it down.

Take it by your local wood shop.. You should find some fine carvers there, If you want to go that route…
