Just wondering what the advantage is of offsetting the D hole (R3)? The right ring finger is no shorter than the right index finger (R1) and seems to be able to reach the same distance on the flute. So what advantages are gained through the offset?

Many people’s ring finger is shorter than the first two.
It depends on your grip.
It can be more ergonomic for the wrists.
