After a long suffering (nearly 5 years on and off ) our PC finally gave up. I managed to rescue all important data from it, fortunately I found someone competent to help getting a CD burner added to the dying PC as it did not recognise itself anymore kind-off. H/D loosing it… I have already installed an emergency computer with all the data again but could not get it online yet. I need to install the Router and DSL things which is going to be fun as I am kind of clueless yet about it and need to RTFM AND to understand it from writing which is not my favorite way of learning :roll: I hope to get us back online during the course of the week. Odd enough is that I was looking for the last 3 weeks for a new one as I thought it is time but did not think it was that urgent to get it…

Given the week you post this, I’m sure you already considered if it could be related to the Sasser worm (Win XP, 2000), right?

unfortunately it was not a virus… virusses I always have latest Securitys running plus a Firewall and Sasser does not harm “98” which I was happily working with… but a H/D which is older than 5 years, working day and night in that time is “an old man”. It seems to have some partitions dead (cannot be recognised in other PCs anymore when tried yesterday) unfortunately there must have been the drivers stored … big fun if you suddenly have no access to anything and also cannot reload the lost drivers as the drives are not recognised anymore, it even lost drivers for ports, monitor, printer, network… tse… horrible for a “DAU” like me. Now I have to get a new one, unfortunately XP has all the illnesses I did not have to worry about anymore with 98

You do know you don’t HAVE to. There’s Linux after all, and if it will take lot of RTFM it’s meant for day and night service. This and a RAID mirrored discs array. What you’ll have to invest in is extra time, but you’ll save in free software…
Linux was something I was thinking about as well as I do know a tiny bit about UNIX but my old collegues who are experts in both did tell me to better “swim with the masses on this” and go for XP as at least I will be able to find someone who can do proper service on then as I cannot. Linux still is not as easy for unexperienced users I was told and even though I am not scared anymore to try and repair my PC I am scared to be left alone with Linux… hmm…

I cannot believe it myself that we see them play again. Last year twice and before that it was 14 years ago for me with the SO-tour which was brilliant as well but these last 2 concerts were fantastic… “what a show”… off home now, we get picked up in an hours time… yai!

Linux is now available on an autoboot CD - and it does NOT install on your hard drive; instead, it ‘mounts’ the h/ds and reads their contents for your convience OC.
Out of the box any Linux OS is built around Networking ( the internet ahem .. and other things .. ) so it will usualy recognize and configure any Lan card in your system - DSL modems etc. You do not have to configure any drivers - maybe type in the name and/or number of your ISP, your log in name and password - if any.
To be fair running older versions could be a challenge to a novice, the hardest thing I recall was remembering how to load the its version of Windows - I think it was Xwin or something equaly unmemorable.
Anyway it is a lot easier than it seems, and when it is running you have the power to lock up any machine that hooks to yours - with or without your consent OC. It is the ultimate war weapon on the internet.
BTW Linux can use its own internet search code to find pages - ie you don’t need Google or any of those.
I came this close to seeing him on the Secret World tour. I had bought great tickets to see him here in Houston at what was then the Summit *. My girlfriend then proceeded to dump me the week before the concert. The depression that followed was bad enough, but then I realized I’d left the tickets at her place! She ended up taking her new boyfriend with the tickets I bought!!! Arrgh! But I’m not bitter.
At least now I have the double CD of that tour, still would have been cool to see him live.

*The Summit was eventually renamed The Compaq Center and recently leased to a church. I find it it amusing that the place I used to see Ozzy Osbourne and Ronnie James Dio perform is now becoming a church.
I still use 98 as well. It seems that whenever I get even remotely close to thinking about XP, several viral reasons come out tell me to stay away from it.
I guess the best hard drive back up is another hard drive.
I gladly announce we are back online , less problems with the installations that I thought and the old computer has died yesterday completely… just jumped off the knife’s edge on saving all our data from it. Thanks for all the tips. Daniel a second drive is a good idea, I was told to do that to this computer.
The concert yesterday was great as he always is. Filled to the last seat. To the last tour they had another very interesting toy on stage, no idea how it is called but looked like a sack carrier with two handles, in standing on it the person balances it out, it was engine driven and they did go quite fast with it, looked like a lot of fun. And again the Zorb which I would love to have one
