Off-the-wall question - Aulos baroque flute

I picked up one of these (the matte version in a hard case) on eBay a couple of months ago…

All the pictures I find show the brand name on the head joint. Mine does not have this. Did they used to come with no name? The hard case is quite nice and DOES say Aulos on the outside. Basically I’m just curious as the flute plays quite well…

Hey Pat,

I think the the stamp looks chintzy, I wondered about removing it with acetone.

Does your Aulos have the visable embouchure insert? The older Matt Aulos traversos had a white embouchure insert (I thought it looked nice).

I am very pleased with my Matt Aulos (THANKS CHAS!). I was initially struck by how strong a tone it produced and it has grown even stronger over the last 3-4 weeks! I resisted my initial temptation to enlarge the F-hole and now I think I’ll establish a long a peacable relationship with this traverso. I love the way small holes produce notes that simply pop out of the flute. The tone tends to be bright and clear, but can get down and dirty too! I also think the Eb key spoils my ear for other flutes, the E’s and often F’s sound to pale (faint) by comparison. Venting the Eb key really brings out the harmonics (especially in the low range). Incedently, I’ve found the Eb key must be vented to do the “One Hand Scale” (overtone excercise).

Enjoy yer Aulos, I think mines a HOOT!

Hope Ya Have a Blast Today!

Mine looks exactly like yours except no “Aulos”. The embouchure insert is the same as yours as well.

While waiting for my Terry McGee to get here, I have been playing this a lot more and really like it. It requires a different embouchure, but has a very nice sound. It’s also a bit quieter than my other flutes.

Pat

Yeah, that’s one nice little flute; glad you’re loving it, still no regrets on this end. (Check the pics sticky to see what I’m playing for 15 minutes today.)

DON’T enlarge the F hole. You’ll never be able to lip the Fnat into any sort of tune if you do. One of the beauties of the traverso is the lip gymnastics of getting the F/F# to sound reasonable.

This is all nice, but could someone answer my original question?

Pat

I had one of these about 5 years ago…I didn’t sell it you, Chas, did I? I can’t recall where it went.

plunk111 - obviously, we don’t know. I don’t remember if mine had Aulos on the headjoint or not…but considering it’s molded ABS there is no way anyone made a replacement headjoint that looks like it’s part of the original flute. You’ve got an Aulos headjoint whether or not it says so unless it’s made of different materials than the body of the flute.

Eric

Wouldn’t anyone who could duplicate the flute be selling it under their own name, and for more money?

Just a thought.

I’m pretty sure I got mine from Doc, maybe 2 or so years ago. It’s quite possible that it was yours at one time.

Plunk, I agree with the others, if yours has the embouchure insert, it’s an Aulos. As Jordan said, it’d be easy to take the badge off of one of those flutes.

Mine was the matte black model without any white embouchure insert. If it looks like an Aulos, I’d bet it’s an Aulos - I know of no other company making such a flute out of ABS.

Eric

The later models also have an embouchure insert, although it’s a matching color. The bodies are (I think) injection-molded, while the inserts are CNC machined, either by mill or laser.
