Thanks Andy this is magnificent - everything you need to know about reedmaking here just about. I have the NPU reedmaking DVD with Kohler, O’Briain, Wooff, Rogge, but there seems to be a lot more material here - fantastic. Well done NPU & the Arts Council. Haven’t had time to look at everything yet though there is so much - recordings of Willie here too - shots of the O’Dowd Egan, has this set been modified by O’Dowd or Leo R., thinking of the metal-encased stock & the keys?
Indeed, well done NPU…an outstanding resource!
Check out the Adreas Rogge reedmaking vid series - when he’s testing it out in the chanter, he puts his mouth around the whole reed and plays the chanter I like an oboe…so much for all that talk about the slightest moisture in the bag killing your reed!
Quod licet Iovi, non licet bovi
Thanks for this. Seems like everyone imaginable is playing tunes in there, great stuff.
Up NPU! This is fantastic. And very well laid-out, too. All in all one of the best resources you could imagine.
I agree - with knobs on.
But, don’t tell us -tell them!!!
They deserve plaudits from the cognoscentii. If your not, now you know why it is worth the membership. NPU need your support; especially with the news these last few days, which will reduce the state funding area. Grant funding will be at a premium, I guess, in the future, which has supported the work producing the updates to the site; but NPU have delivered. Support them. Keep it going. Make sure your membership is renewed…make a donation!

Indeed. I’m a member and logged in so don’t know offhand how much, if any, is members-only – but there’s so much good stuff on here pipers have no excuse to feel unsupported anymore. It’d be good to return the favor.
NPU is working hard to revitalize the sport – much harder than they have to, because it’s not like many folks are going to get rock-star rewards out of it. A whole lot of great makers and players contribute time, tutoring, materials and instruments to the cause – Ronan Browne did some of the photography of famous sets, even.
So yeah. I wish I knew all my $100 contributions were so useful, especially directly to me!
As a member of NPU I think its a great site, especially the video Tutorials, but as a beginner the ABC notes for the tunes would have been helpful. What also would have been helpful is if the tunes were made available for download so that they could be used with a video program to slow them down a touch more.
Other than that its a great source for a beginner to the advanced player.
“NPU source” seems to have a wealth of information touching on all subjects related to Uilleann pipes, just like Chiff and fipple and the Uilleann forum. 3 excellent sites imo.
Martin.
You can download if you have a recent version of RealPlayer.
Well done NPU.
I use Handbrake to rip DVD sections and analyse them using Transcribe! Are you saying that you can use RealPlayer to rip such clips (like on the NPU site, YouTube, etc.) and do the same thing? If so, how do you do this?
Hi Dan,
I’ve not done it yet myself but I’ll have a go this evening and let you know.
Thanks. I’ve been places where others have wondered the same thing and there’s lots of confusion about how to do this.
I’m using (with XP, SP 3) some Firefox extension called Download YouTube Videos + Flash Video Downloader / Downloadhelper. Seems to work, albeit NPU just provide stock file names so you’ll need to rename everything as you download it - and I can only do this after actually starting the file in question, too. What I do is to set downloads to a main folder named “NPU,” then rename the folders as they arrive and put them into subfolders for each artist.
Thanks, NPU.
Why RealPlayer sucks. Plenty more where that came from. I used to use RealAlternative when I just had to play some .rm file; RP was renowned for all the malware they jammed into it. Anymore you just don’t need the thing.
Is this legal?? I would think it ok if NPU has giving permission to download and save the video files, but if not, then….. ![]()
The article you linked is dated 2005 and seems to have been written either by a teenager or an ASLWP.
In order to view them at all they need to be downloaded to your computer so that your browser can render them. I expect that as long as you are using them only for your own personal use they wouldn’t mind. Besides it would save bandwidth for them.
I wish some of the videos were better quality. I viewed the whole of the Woofe making a ringed f-key series of videos and in some parts it was very difficult to see what he was doing because of the quality of the video, out of focus shot or he was in the way.
Fantastic resource that can only get better as more items are added.
I’ve had that conversation with (read “nagged at him about it”) Mr. McKeon myself; if nothing else it would make NPU’s lives easier from a site space, bandwidth and document portability standpoint (plus, Scorch doesn’t always get along so well with my computer so I’m biased against it). Another vote for ABC’s wouldn’t be harmful – if you feel so inclined, drop him a note! If a few more people ask they might be inclined to give it another think.
