HB.

What does it mean, Harry? What’s “FAS”? Is it a course on how to record cultural history, a cultural history course in itself, or are you trying to teach NPU culture?

"FÁS is Ireland’s national training and employment authority. We aim to:

  • Improve employability, job skills and mobility
  • Meet labour market needs
  • Promote competitiveness and social inclusion"

Don’t worry about it too much, I think you’d find the cost of commuting from Canada a tad inhibitive (unless you plan to immigrate?).

A number of people will do placement training in the archive: learning to locate and record references to archive material, digitise material, transcribe things (music and interviews), collect for the archive from outside sources etc. They will also be trained and assessed in certain tasks and receive FETAC (don’t ask) certificates to help improve their employment possibilities.

Regards,

Harry.

Wasn’t a large group of FAS trainees involved in indexing O’Neill’s book and whatever was held in the archive around 1989-1990? Can’t remember what benefit that had on the use of the archive.

Yes, there has been very useful and prolific FAS involvement in the past. Maybe you should contact the archive to jog your memory about this. It would be easy to forget it and take people’s work for granted.

Harry.

Quite enough of that going on, thanks.
