Loren, darling, snookums -
That whistle is absolutely to-die-for! And to think that all this time I’ve been blowing tiny little whistles like the Generation! This a real MAN of a whistle, just what I was looking for!
Perhaps we can work something out >
Love and kisses,
Liberace
Sure thing Libby baby; I’ll have some diamonds slapped on it and you’ll good to go.

I get the queasy feeling that Porridge is back in the body of Librace!!! And it is Halloween.
MarkB
What took you so long Mark?
Porridge has many faces…or should I say flavors…or is it Flavours…or Flav…

Loren has a Chieftain!!!
That he’s selling it is not a surprise,
That he owns one in the first place amazes me.
Must have happened when he was young and foolish! ![]()
Is there a story behind this one Loren??
Vinny
Yeah, Here’s the Story:
I got these waaay back, before I’d ever played a Chieftain. I needed a Low F at the time, and while I did have one on order from Colin, it wasn’t due to arrive for a while.
Phil O. told me he had an unusually good Chieftain, told me even Bill Ochs was impressed with it. Phil O. said he also had G and C Chieftains that he’d throw in for cheap, so I figured what the heck, let’s see if these whistles are crap or what?
Turns out that the F was pretty good, except for the tone holes being drilled off-line, but when the Overton arrived it just blew the Chieftain away in terms of tone, and quality…Imagine, the tone holes were actually drilled strait!!!
The C Chieftain was unreasonably loud - Good for busking on a loud street corner perhaps, or playing in a Rock Band! I warned the person I sold it to that the whistle was quite loud. I currently have an easy blowing Overton Narrow Bore C that’s killer - Great work by Colin.
The G. Chieftain also had a manufacturing flaw: This time on the blade. This caused the whistle to be harder to blow in the first octave than the second…interesting, but since the tone and workmanship of that whistle was no match for my Overton G…I let it go cheap, explaining the blade flaw, and odd playing characteristics to the would be buyer ahead of time.
So now I’m selling the F, and I’ll be happy to finally be rid of the last of these whistles. I’ve played several other Chieftains, including a “Gold” Low D, and have found them all to be mediocre at best: Only the F actually sounds and plays pretty good, but it has the out of line holes, which I’ve seen on a couple of other Chieftain whistles as well. The Chieftains that I’ve seen/played that didn’t have some sort of manufacturing flaw, mostly sounded rather plain and or didn’t play well, so there you have it.
As I said, I’ll be quite happy to have this whistle sold, for the reasons I’ve mentioned, but more importantly because I don’t want to own anything associated with, what I consider to be, such a highly unethical whistle maker.
Loren
Yeah, yeah,
A likely story . . . Could it possibly be that you are, in fact, a closet-Chieftain-fan???
Well, Mr. Bookbinder???
I wish you’d quit beating around the bush and tell us what you really think! ![]()
And I’d better quit before I get myself into more trouble than I already have. ![]()
Have a great day Loren!

I got the G…my first non-soprano D, if I recall…you definitely mentioned the blade, but not the blowing characteristics. Now I gotta go back and see if I notice the same thing.
After getting the Burke, the Chieftan got put away. Time to polish it up and move it on, I think…after trying to see if I find the lower register harder to blow.
Are you sure I didn’t mention the whistle played differently?
I may not have used the same wording, perhaps I something along the lines of “The second octave is easier than the first” or “The second octave on this whistle plays easily relative to the first” or even “The bell note on this whistle is quite strong and the second octave surprisingly easy” ![]()
Seems like you didn’t even notice though, since you can’t remember any unusual characteristic to the whistle.
Truth be told, I’m a picky bastard - a real perfectionist, so things like we’re talking about here, may go unnoticed by others. Again, Phil O. played this Low F for quite some time and never noticed the holes being out of line, and apparently Bill Ochs didn’t comment on it either, even though you can clearly see in the picture that I’m not imagining or exaggerating the out of line holes.
It’ll be interesting to hear what you have to say about the Chieftain now… ![]()

Am I the only one who percives this as an offset pattern left-handed whistle and not mistakenly drilled out of line?

Oh please Tony, it’s lousy quality control, and that’s all. If it were anything more you’d have heard somewhere (before now) that this was some sort of option on these whistles - you would have seen or heard it being advertised - and most certainly you would have seen or heard of a Chieftain model with an off-set right hand pattern, wouldn’t you?
C’mon man, wake up and smell the dull drill bits.
What I’m wondering is how particular thread got booby trapped with the re-direct from hell? Rich, any ideas?
Loren
Good luck with your eBay sale
Okay, so either Rich or Dale is Tubedude - either that or someone else has hacked into the message board enough to change the order of posts…whatever.

Yeah well, at least I’m honest, which is more important to me than selling a freakin’ whistle.

I haven’t gone back to it yet, Loren. Its interesting that the backpressure on the Chieftan G was an annoyance to me, but the backpressure on the Kerry low D was really very nice, and made some of the playing much easier than with the Burke low D. I wonder if there is tweak to increase backpressure.
Sweet! Whistle messageboard hackers! That’s about as badass as they come

Why sell it then??
