now for something completely different....sorta

check this out, it’s quite special, a hybrid between folk and classic:

Others have done it better than Hughes de Courson. It feels like there is more “bridging” of genres here rather than blending which makes it feel a bit awkward and forced to my ear. I think that Shaun Davey handled the meeting of classical & folk much more appropriately with The Brendan Voyage, et al.

My 2 cents,
David

Thanks David, I’ve never heard this kind of a combination before, I’ll check out the brendan voyage.
slainte.

The Brendan Voyage is “an orchestral suite for uilleann pipes” composed by Shaun Davey. I’m sure if you ask around you’ll find some purists and such who hold it in disdain. I love it. The piper is Liam O’Flynn, one of my personal favorites.

Cheers,
David

P.S. Click on this link for audio samples of The Brendan Voyage. Unfortunately none of the samples are really long enough to demonstrate Shaun Davey’s skillful merging of uilleann pipes into an orchestral setting.
