not crazy

Sinéad O’Connor advertises her sanity

The Singer Sinéad O’Connor has taken out a full-page advertisement in an Irish national newspaper to complain that she should not be “called crazy”.

Ms O’Connor took the ad in the Irish Examiner, claiming that, for decades, she had been “consistently ridiculed, lashed and called mad”, and, most recently, unfairly criticised for her campaign against headlice.

In Ireland she is regarded as a talented but troubled performer, with a striking voice and striking appearance. Some of her exploits are, however, regarded as bizarre.

In 1992, she ripped up a photograph of Pope John Paul II on television, and objected to the American national anthem being played at her concerts.

She was ordained Mother Bernadette Mary by a quasi-Catholic sect in 1999, and announced she was gay a year later, before marrying in 2001.

In her 2,000-word ad, she said: “I don’t think there can be any person who has been as consistently lashed as I have been and always am, no matter what I do.”

She repeated claims that she was abused by her late mother, although these have been called exaggerated by her siblings, including author Joseph O’Connor.

Sinead has always been, as we say in Dublin,a Header.

This is not the first time she has taken a full page add in the Irish media. The last time she was dissing her Dad I think.
Leaving aside her celebrated eccentricities there is one serious voice there. I recently heard her version of “The Parting Glass” from her Sean nos nua Album and the voice is amazing in its frailty and delicacy.

Many people, myself included, have been waiting for years for her to get it together and record an album of songs that do justice to such a wonderful voice.

Whatever stunt she pulls off she will always be one of Dublins most beloved daughters.God bless her.

Slan,
D.

Many people in America seem to associate her only with the Pope incident or Nothing Compares 2U, and dismiss the notion that she’s a great singer entirely because of some of the things she says and does (like taking out this ad).

But I agree with you that her voice is spectacular. Her version of My Lagan Love sends chills down my spine. As does her Amazing Grace.

My favorite song of hers, ever, is her version of Bob Marley’s War.

Many people, myself included, have been waiting for years for her to get it together and record an album of songs that do justice to such a wonderful voice.

She claims she’s never going to record again. But she’s claimed that before, so we’ll see. I’ve been wanting her to do a country album forever (her version of Dagger Through The Heart by Dolly Parton is also one of my favorites).

Poor thing…there’s nothing wrong with campaigning against head lice. Although I can totally see why her actions leave many people scratching their heads… :stuck_out_tongue:

Heather

The campaign against headlice is only funny because she doesn’t have any hair.

I read a longer version of that story, and, among other requests, she stated her wish to be left alone so she could just be a little old lady. Yikes. When, I wonder, should one take on that mantle?

I’m glad I’m not the only one who noticed the irony of a bald person campaining against lice…

I would like to say one serious thing about this: it’s not at all unusual for the families of abuse victims to claim the allegations are exaggerated or even completely fabricated. Families usually deny anything happened and are determined to maintain their secrets, even if it means totally alienating the victim.

Thank you for saying that. It’s all too true.

Cranberry,

I realized later that it might have looked like I was implying you were supporting the abuse statement when I quoted your original message. I definitely did not mean that, and I’m grateful to see you didn’t take it that way. I was irritated at the news article for implying such a thing was even relevant, and that she was clearly lying about other things because her family claimed she’d exaggerated the abuse.

(That came out more confusing than it was meant to be! Rats.)

Anyway, you knew what I meant, and I’m glad I didn’t accidentally make you think I was attacking you. I wasn’t.
