Found these on ebay.

Well, if Burleigh set no. 126 is on sale for $900, then lucky me - I bought Burleigh set no. 127 a year and a half ago for GBP 320. My set only has a seven-key chanter, not nine-key, but it’s a nice instrument and I’m happy with it. Prices are clearly getting firmer

I guess the only difference between the set on ebay and buying directly is now the sets are made with imitation Ivory. The set on ebay says that its real ivory. Do you know if your set is real ivory? Otherwise, its really no savings over buying them directly from David. They cost 575 pounds on his site. Roughly $1000. Love the sound of Northumbrians…oh well one day

Seems as if I will be bidding on these…which if I do…My Ups will have to be sold for my wonderful wife is not going to put up with both.

Wish me luck…

I just bought a set of D Northumbrian pipes. I really like the sound and the stacatto style but I have to say they are nowhere near as expressive or as interesting an instrument as the UPs. For frustrated listeners they are much quiter than UPs, but no nyyaaa.

Also, I had been researching makers - thinking about getting a F+ set - and had seen a number of negative comments on Burliegh pipes related to tuning and workmanship. His pipes are half the price of many makers but maybe some caution is indicated. Play before you buy might be a good idea although I note in the listing they’ve been rebuilt and can be returned.

Got home and have been really thinking before I place a bid. Every since I here Glands play his in Nashville, I have been looking forward to getting a set at a reasonable price.

But then I began to think and wrote don the pros and cons of the purchase and actually asked myself what was the reasoning for purchasing a UPs set? My answer to myself is reflected partially in Simonknights comment that nothing sounds like the UPs and I love the sound even though what I am creating now is actually noise to me…

So I have decided to pass up on bidding for now…sign off the computer…watch the NPU Vol.1 and play my pipes.

Night all…

Way to go KDMARTINKY stay with us (when you get a Northumbrian attack, play your chanter staccato). Anyway I prefer the sound of Colin Ross’s pipes to Burleigh’s.

I wasn’t intending to be negative on the Northumbrian pipes - it’s just to me the UPs have so many more dimensions to them musically. The correct solution is to have both!

Good decision. I have a CD of Pauline Cato (recommended by BigDavy), Northumbrian pipes are lovely. But so are UP and you have made progress with them so stick with what you’re doing now. Don’t get side-tracked. Just my opinion.

Good luck with your wife! ; )

My NSPs are definitely more spouse friendly than my UPs. If my fingers miss a hole it’s more like strangling a mouse than murdering a sheep.

Apologies to any vegetarians out there.
