NOLLAIG

If you are in Chicago December 18-19, please consider attending this event, you will have a great time and help make a difference for those less fortunate.

Every year for the past 3 years Bohola – a Chicago-based trio consisting of Jimmy Keane, Sean Cleland, and Pat Broaders - have played for an Irish Christmas concert called “Nollaig” at the Old Town School of Folk Music, 4544 N. Lincoln Avenue in Chicago (www.oldtownschool.org). This year’s concert is Saturday, Dec 18. As in previous years, a large part of the proceeds benefit two great Chicago institutions: Misericordia (www.misericordia.com) and the Mercy Home for Boys and Girls (www.mercyhome.org).

The show explores both the Christian and pre-Christian traditions surrounding the Winter Solstice in a mixture of song, spoken word, and instrumental pieces from Ireland, America, Scotland, Wales, England and Brittany. The songs extend from the ancient Kilmore carols of Ireland to the humorous songs of the Irish-American vaudeville stage. The joyous words of poets and writers such as Patrick Kavanagh, Dylan Thomas, and John B. Keane whisk the audience back to a childhood Christmas while the cheerful reels, jigs, marches, hornpipes, and polkas fill the air and set the feet a tapping. The featured performers, Bohola, create a delightful musical tapestry to celebrate the mid-winter season!
