Niel Gow's Lament for Death of his Second Wife

I really enjoy listening to ‘Niel Gow’s Lament for the Death of his Second Wife’ - its really pretty when played on a fiddle. I’d like to play along with the fiddle.

Parts of the tune go too low for a D whistle…

For instance, the first four measures go like:

DB,|A,3B,D2 D3ED2|E2F2A2 B4d2|A2F2D2 E3DE2|{DE}F2D2B,2 B,4

Any recommendations for dealing with the low “A,” and low “B,” ?

Is there a D whistle friendly version of this tune?

Maybe just knock it up an octave?

I play it on an A whistle. The tune doesn’t go lower than A and doesn’t go higher than f#.

For me the best option is transposition to G: in this key the tune goes very well accross the octaves.

Otherwise, if you want to play in the original key, pick an A whistle!
