Heya Nick, I was browsing through your site yesterday. Nice job sir. I also like the o-ring on the base of the staple idea, mind if I steal it sometime?
The thingy on the staple is not an o-ring - although that’s not a bad idea - but a couple turns of waxed thread. It serves both as a seal and as a marker for the position of the reed in its seat.
I’m thinking that I stole the idea from Tim Britton so what’s to keep you from, etc., etc.
Nick’s article on Pipes in 19th c. fiction,
provides an interesting companion and contrast with IRISH PIPERS IN LITERATURE AND OTHER STORIES: IDIOSYNCRACIES OF IRISH MUSICIANS (Chapter XXXI from Captain Francis O’Neill’s “Irish Minstrels and Musicians”, Chicago, Regan Printing House, 1913). Of course O’Neill has a different perspective which may well be reflected in his choices of citation - (and of course the O’Neill chapter is not a modern scholarly article). If you liked Nick’s article the O’Neill chapter may be of interest too - as well as O’Neill’s other chapters on pipers and pipes.
for anyone else who might stumble upon this thread way up here in 2013 and be interested in information on Nick Whitmer’s pipes, etc., i’d like to offer that his website is now at http://whitmerpipes.com/.
Thanks for the update. I had completely forgotten about this thread.
There is a zombie website at the old URL. I tried to get Verizon to remove it, but it was only an exercise in frustration. So, yes, http://www.whitmerpipes.com/ is the only “official” updated site.
