Nicholson's School of flute

Check out my newly acquired book, it is a printing published by William Hall, about 1845. The book is in great shape for it’s age. I have already found a interesting factoid, he used seal skin in the indentations, to prevent slippage. I had heard mentioned that it was shark skin, but seal makes more sense…

The book is quite large, kind of like a coffee table book. It no longer has the accompanied CD with Nicholson playing the tunes, but if I get my hands on a time machine, I plan to remedy that… :really:
It is shown with my Nicholson’s Improved flute…

Cool! Not a fan of the Nicholson flute design after my experience with
the Olwell version of it.

Nice! I enjoyed reading the Nicholson excerpts on Terry’s site. He seems to know what he’s talking about.

Sweet! If you.ever do get back to visit old Chuck, I wouldn’t mind if you could grab me a CD copy, too, and perhaps his flute as well.

Actually, I’m surprised that a copy of the CD hasn’t come up on eBay…

Best wishes.

Steve

It’s good stuff, Jon.
I have both volumes…lovely reading and some fun stuff to play, too.
certainly gives a nice understanding of what he was on about.

I believe my copy is from c.1830 or so, in London.

There are some facsimiles of Nicholsons Preceptive Lessons for the Flute on Rick Wilsons page:

And of course Roslin Castle is there as well.

And there are a few Irish Melodies in there.

worth getting Nicholson’s version of the great Irish air, the Coolin’… i got mine through the Library of Congress, which has a very nice, accommodating copy service.

Anyone interested in a copy of the book, I photographed the pages and put it up on My Google drive. Contact me with your email, and I can send a copy.
