Newbie which Low D to buy?

I everyone I’m new here and would like to say Hi and ask for advice…

I see a few high end low d’s offered on here, and as I’m a complete novice but love the sound quality of some of the whistles I hear, which should I be thinking of?

I’m looking at < 100USD approx and will need it posted to Ireland

Cheers

Is your relational operator correct? You want to spend more than $100? If it is meant to be a less than, I don’t think you’ll be looking at anything other than a Susato or Dixon in PVC. If you could go a bit more, I’d highly recommend looking for a used Burke Viper. You might find a used one in the neighborhood of $200… Good luck in your search!

In that price range, I also would be looking at previously owned whistles. True, there is some additional risk, but you can find really great bargains.

Plus you have the advantage of a good exchange rate if you find something you like in the US.

If you want to buy new, I would also consider Howards. They were in the same general price range as Susatos the last time I looked. I personally like the Howard sound more.

Actually, I’ve owned both Howard and Susato low Ds and found that the Howard was a little too weak in the low end and the Susato was OK, but mine had a key and all that “clacking” drove me crazy. Once you play one of the higher-end whistles, you can’t go back - it’s kinda like the reason I have Bose headphones… Once I tried them nothing else measured up! I forgot - I also had a Hoover for a while and would put it between the Susato and the Howard. Bottom line - save your money and buy a high-end low D and you’ll save yourself a lot of grief.

I’ve switched to flute for the low stuff anyway, but still kinda regret selling the Viper!

Thanks folks…you’ve confirmed my beliefs! I’ve listened to quite a few whistles and ruling out the players ability, means that there are better odds of getting a clinker by purchasing in the high end models.

I believe I’ll save a little longer and go for a Burke Viper, now do I go for Alu or Brass

Thank you all
