Just wanted to say hello to all…been lurking here about a week, and learning some good things.
I’m a ‘late comer’ to music, and just started playing native american flute about 5 years ago.
I’ve been playing (playing around with) bamboo flutes and penny whistles off and on for about a year now. Don’t know much about reading music, but my youngest son can site read (he plays penny whistle, recorder, bamboo flute, native american flute, ocarina, and clarinet).
I’ve been working with another youngster who lives near that can play a large assortment of instruments…but is awesome with a whistle!
We’ve been working on something quite a bit different lately tho…we’ve been learning the song “Nanaki”…or the “Cosmo Canyon Theme” from Final Fantasy VII. It sounds AWESOME on a whistle…kind of a different sound from the traditional songs, but still VERY cool.
Side note…I bought a Sweetheart Pro D for myself for my birthday (and was referred here by Tygress) but my wife decided to ‘lock it away’ until my birthday actually arrives…she’s an evil (but very loveable ) woman!
Anyway, greetings to all, and I look forward to learning a lot from all of you!
Welcome, Stormowl. It’s never too late to start! This is a great place to hang out, chat and learn about whistles and music. Use the search tool to look for subjects you’re interested in. It’s always lively! Great whistle, that Pro D. You’ll enjoy it!
Hey Owl! Nice to see you made it! Hope the birthday isn’t too long in coming so you get to play your whistle soon.
The folks here are great…you’ll get tons of wonderful information, and over at the Pub there are whole gobs of stuff unrelated (usually) to music. Ask if there is anything we can help you with!

Good for you, that’s awesome. That was a very good game, I don’t quite remember the music since I played it so long ago, but I’ll have to bring it out and listen. I do remember Cosmo Canyon.
Please keep in touch, I want to hear how that goes and hopefully hear the tune if you can get it recorded.
I’ll make sure to post on my birthday (Aug 10) and let ya’ll know how much I enjoy the whistle.
Here’s a link to the song that we’re working on…it’s listed as “Red XIII’s theme” on this site. We’re doing the main melody obviously. I’ve never heard a version with it done on a whistle until we tried, but it sounds AWESOME! Right in the range for a D…second and first octaves.
Right now I’ve got a Generations D, and a Clarke D as well (and my youngest has one of each as well).
I’m also a ‘rennie’…so having an all wood whistle to take to faire with me will be wonderful. The other ‘whistler’ that lives here near me also posts here, but I’m not sure of his name on this forum. He’s got a Pro D…and when I first heard and saw it, I was hooked.
Hi Stormowl—I’m not much of a whistle player so I won’t be giving you any advice—don’t worry, lots of other people will . It’s always nice to see a new face around here. Hope your birthday comes really fast!
Besides its other great qualities, one of the very cool things about that whistle is that you can make a simple, partitioned cloth bag for it, and (disassembled), carry it around in your pocket! The only other whistle I have that can travel that way is my 2-part Clare with a Hoover Whitecap. Now one or the other goes with me everywhere. So…don’t leave home without it!
(And remember to disassemble it for storage, or the cork will eventually compress down, leaving you with a loose headjoint).
My wife went to a craft store and bought an unfinished wooden box to store my whistle in. Her and the boys stained the box to match the whistle, and then lined the interior in green felt.
So the lovely thing is always stored disassembled. And today I’ll be making a run to a local music shop that carries whistles and such to pick up a recorder brush and cork grease to store with it. (and maybe a songbook to help me get some new tunes! ).
