Just thought I would say hi. I’ve been lurking on the sight for a little while, and learnt a great deal from many of the posts here, and also came to the opinion what a nice community you have here, so I thought I would join.
A little about myself, I’ve been playing music for most of my life, though that has been with the sax and flute. I picked up a feadog D and a Generation C a couple of years ago, and occasionally pulled them out for a play. Recently I have got more interested in the whistle and flute, and have been playing them quite a bit. I have also just ordered a Low D Copper Dream from ethnic wind. I am really looking forward to it.
So hello all, I look forward to being a part of this community.
I recently bought a cheapie concert flute as I had to sell my old one many years ago. It came down to it or the sax. The sax one.
I played in the usual school bands when young, and then started busking, as work was all over the place, so playing regularly with anyone else was out of the question. While basking with the sax once I got offered a position in an orchestra for a professional gig of Cats, stupid me turned it down, they toured for 5 years.
Work and other things took me away.from music for the last 8 years.
My girlfriend and the wonderful sword fighting group I work with got me back into music.
The whistle came out for a pirate show we were doing, we needed Drunken Sailor. My girlfriend has a hell of a voice, and most in the group can play instruments, most traditional, so we are going to have some jam sessions and see what eventuates.
But my little feadog has hooked me with the whistle. Later on I’ll be getting a decent folk flute as well. My lass got me one for Xmas, but it was off eBay, cheap Pakistani instrument. I can play it, but it is a lot of work, if I hadn’t already been a flautist I think it would have turned me off.
Wow, that ended up long. If you made it to this point I’m impressed.
Wow, I’m glad I asked. That’s quite the story. I often get the opportunity to read short autobiographies that people write. They invariably start out, “I’ve lived a pretty normal life…” then they continue with how the person lived without electricity or running water until they graduated from high school or they were one of 15 kids or some other completely unusual story and adventure that is not the least bit a “pretty normal life.”
I suppose to them that would be normal. I’ve heard those sort of stories too and wondered how the considered it normal. But in Australia we like to understate hardship, I guess it’s our way. One I heard once was, “My background? Pretty normal, dad was a drunk and mum was a whore so I had to leave home at 15”. Where I’m living at the moment that used to be the norm.
Say, as a Flute Player have you run across Doug Tipples Flutes? http://tippleflutes.com/
He has an enviable reputation on the Flute Board.
I don’t play the flute myself but I am seriously tempted as the price is so reasonable.
They also come up on the Used Instument Board every now and again. http://forums.chiffandfipple.com/viewforum.php?f=35
Welcome again.
Hi Maki, the tipple flutes do have a very good rep, though I was thinknig of getting one of Casey Burns folk flute.
Mutepointe, I don’t think I could have played it for 5 years, a year or two maybe, it would haqve been an interesting experience, but I was too busy becoming a palaeontologist.
Thanks Jiminos, that’s good confirmation I’m on the right trail. I got to say this forum has been an invaluable source of infor for me, though I wish I had come across it before my missus bought that flute off ebay. Might have to do a post on it over on the flute forum.
Back to whistles.
Can’t wait for my low D, saw a video of the copper dream low D being played by Nick Metcalfe, wow does it sound nice.
