I’m new to all this. Well okay i did play the recorder as a kid and played around on a tin whistle, but no formal training. Any way I’ve always love irish music and I’m also into medieval re-enactment and had been thinking about trying out a low whistle. And so today my mothers days gift from my daughter and hubby arrived. A Tony Dixon 2 piece low D whistle. At first it seemed acward but then i read on this great site the i was holding it wrong. That helped greatly. Well anyway I just wanted say Hello and was wondering if there are other whistlers like me out there in NW Arkansas. Well anyway i tend to ramble on so I’ll say night for now.
Hi Zaser, welcome to the board and enjoy your Dixon! An excellent brand. If you find the stretch too hard you may want to pick up a soprano D to learn tunes on, as you practice the requirements of the low D.
And so WhOA begins… (Whistle Obsessive Acquisition)
Hi, Zaser! You’re not in WhOA Wasteland here! I’m from Fort Smith, DanielCW is from Booneville, Kardshark87 is from Bartlesville, OK, and JayMitch and Kim from Tulsa are from, well, Tulsa. In fact, the Undisputed was married in Fort Smith!
You mentioned being into medieval re-enactment. Are you in the S.C.A.? Do you do the Ren Faire at Withrow Springs?
I’m in Oklahoma, but about as close to Northwest Arkansas as I am to Tulsa. The funny thing is, I go to Tulsa all the time, and am in Missouri frequently, and never in my life recall being in Arkansas. Actually, I take that back, I remember when I was a small child, my Dad, a minister, took us to Booneville, where he “tried out for” a church.
I live in Rogers. And I’m involved in the SCA. It is so neat to find out that there are others out there who also love music and whistles. By the way my name is Joanne if you care to know.
They’re playing at the Mayfest this weekend. I’m taking my mom and two boys to see them!
I just got my whistle a little over a week ago. Last night I was practicing out on the driveway, watching my kids play and waiting for the hubby to get home. I finished playing one tune and my neighbor across the street came out and applauded! LOL Apparently she’d been listening with her windows open.
