New version of PalmABC

Hi y’all,

I’ve added a couple of new useful features to PalmABC, the most excellent freeware .ABC player for Palm V and later Pilots:

  • Ability to search and do repeat searches through the tune titles for a string. Useful if like me, you have 1500 tunes in the .ABC database. The search strings are currently case-sensitive.

  • More stylistically accurate playback of short and long rolls

To install the updated version:

  1. Download and install the original PalmABC software from the PalmABC home page using the installer:

http://www.gander.demon.co.uk/palmabc.htm

  1. Download and install my updated PalmABC.prc from:

http://members.home.com/eskin/PalmABC.prc

  1. Hotsync your Palm to copy the new .prc file to your device.

Please let me know if you run into any issues with the new features or would like a copy of the modified source files.

Cheers,

Michael Eskin

Yes!!! Woo Hoo!!!

Thanks Michael, this is exactly what I’ve been looking for

Wow! I already loved my Palm and this makes it even better!

Thanks a lot,

Ilana

p.s. haven’t sync yet, but is it suitable for IIIc?

I tried in on my Palm III, didn’t work there, but did work on my Palm V. Probably worth a try, my guess is that the code uses features that were only supported in a particular version of the PalmOS and later.

Michael

What does this program do? I’ve got a IIIxe running OS 3.5.2, any predictions if it will work?

Where can I get ABC files? For that matter, what are ABC files?

ABC is a text based tune representation that makes an excellent and compact way to exchange traditional music.

Here is the URL for the ABC home page:

http://www.gre.ac.uk/~c.walshaw/abc/

There are editors and players for both Mac, Windows, and Palm devices, as well as literally thousands of tunes available in .ABC format from JCs Tune Finder:

http://trillian.mit.edu/~jc/music/abc/FindTune.html

For example, on my Palm V, I have nearly 1600 tunes, and the file size is about 600K.

Please check the links above for more information.

Finally, but too bad! I have been looking for a program like this for a while, but alas! It doesn’t work for me. I can install the PRC file OK, but Windows 2000 is not letting me install the conduit. It fails on a registry error. So, all I end up with is the two default tunes. Time to reinstall Windows 98?

I had the same problem installing the conduit on Windows 2000, sent an email to the author. I am able to get it to work on Windows 98. Hopefully he’ll come through with an update or make the conduit code available. Alternatively, I’ll see what I can do to write my own conduit or come up with a manual procedure for Win2K.

Michael

Michael,

I was able to get it working on my Windows ME machine. Now, would you care to share the PalmABC.abc file you’ve put together with the 1600 tunes?

Thanks!

Jamie

They are available online at:

Enjoy!
