New to here and to the flute

my sister gave me this bambo flute it has 6 notes holes. but I cant seem to get it to give me anything that sounds like music. it is marked on the end with an E so I would guess its in the key of E .. quite large realy about 20 inches long. would love to learn to play it . but cant afford lessons
also my nephew gave me a bamboo whistle that looks like a penny whistle but I dont know its key. its easyer to play than the flute.

I have played recorders before though i need to brush up on my music reading.

I will be looking for music to play in older medival styles.. simple tunes mostly till I learn more

The flute is a harsh mistress. The hardest part is getting it to make any sound at all. And it’s

which has probably visited this issue before. They could point you to some websites, at least.
