"New" Overton F

I posted a while back, querying about F whistles, and have since received an anodized Overton from another C&F member. Thought I’d report on the instrument.

Wow.

Oh, do you want more? It’s got a sound all its own, at least to judge by my other whistles. Most of my other “high-end” whistles are Burkes and Water Weasels, which are all lovely, as well. Compared to the Burkes I have (high and low Ds, Low G, all Al-Pros), the sound is more complex, throaty, reedy. Easy to play for a long time on one breath due to the backpressure, and on this one I really have to lean into the high notes (compared to the Burkes, anyway). Spot-on in tune.

I played a couple different whistles for my wife, and she said the Burkes sounded “ethereal” to her – pure in tone, few overtones – whereas the Overton sounded darker and warmer, with a more complex overtone series.

Maybe they should be called “Overtones”.

Great instrument (thanks, Brian). Now to learn those Lunasa tunes. . .

Overtones, that’s brilliant!
