have just joined…am expecting my first whistle in the post on Wednesday…at 65 and just retired thats not bad! The feelings are a bit like I felt just before Christmas when I was about seven!!!The question is…will I be able to get on with my newly arrived friend when it arrives in the morning? I will let you know…Les. ![]()
Welcome and good luck! If you can’t get a sound out of the whistle, remember you didn’t step on it hard enough.
Enjoy ![]()
Welcome!
Les, welcome! I can tell you it doesn’t matter what your age, getting a new whistle is always exciting!!

Hi! ![]()
Justine
Good luck! I hope you enjoy the tinwhistle as much as I do. I think you’ll start to find it especially satisfying to play once you learn how to ornament your songs, and you have a good enough ear to put in your own little flavors.

Have fun (both with the whistle and us lot). ![]()
So Les, where do you live (you sound like an Englishman to me), what’s your musical background, what sort of music do you plan to play?
Most important of all, what whistle did you buy???
Welcome to C&F from another 65 year old whistler. I got a start at a much younger age. I got my first whistle when I was about 45. I actually began playing when I was about 64. Enjoy your first whistle. Have you heard about WhOA. You will.
Ron
The whistle didn’t turn up today…hopefully Thursday…Yes Martin…I am English…ish!!! My musical background…Recorder…trumpet…piano and keyboards over the years sincwe I was a nipper…most recent…piano and organ in a church. The orfered whistle…an Overton Low D…I am not well off…just financially irresponsible…just hope my pension fund doesn’t run out. Again…thanks to all who have responded.
Was that an Overton Low D you just said regarding your first whistle on order? Yikes! You do jump in with both feet. It is a wonderful lovely whistle though. I would venture to say perhaps, that a whistle without such a wide reach might be a bit easier to start with? If so, keep the Overton, buy a high D, (feed the WhOA).
Welcome to the wonderful world of whistles!
Sara
welcome.
Considering what you ordered for your first whistle, you will fit in here perfectly. We are a strange and lovely bunch.
About 10.30 this morning the overton D arrived…after a few strokes and a cuddle I discovered what SARA means when she said it’s a long stretch’
It really is and whilst I should have perhaps started on something easier…now I have it I must apply myself …have been practising the stretch all day…and the idea is coming…I must try blowing it next. Am currently browsing both the web and The Low Whistle Book I also sent for. I’m a bit like a kid with a new toy…think I’ll love it though. Les. ![]()
