New Member seeks Music

I’m a flute player who has recently begun to play the whistle. I came upon an album by Joannie Madden that was outstanding. (Songs of the Irish Pennywhistle). One song that I have been unable to track down music for is The Immigrant. Would anyone know where I might be able to get the music for said song? I would be eternally grateful…well I’m 67 and not sure how long that might be!

Thanks in advance
Garfield (real not code name!)

Garfield, my 81 year old mom says that you’re still a youngster.

Here below is a quick ABC transcription of the tune, melody only, first time through. You can get the ornaments and breath pauses from the recording. The second time through, Joanie mixes up the sub-parts quite a bit, but you can figure that out from listening, too.

Joanie plays this in D fingering on a C whistle, so I’ve transcribed it in D.

If you know what to do with ABC notation, have at it. If not, you can use the Concertina.net Tune-O-Tron here:

http://www.concertina.net/tunes_convert.html

The converter doesn’t handle long tunes, so I split it into 2 sections. Just copy and paste the first section of the tune into the conversion box, click Submit to generate the sheet music, and use the PDF link for a nice copy you can print out. Go back and do the same with the second section. Voilà!

I may post a version of this transcription on thesession.org later. Meantime, enjoy and happy whistling! If you have problems, send me a PM and I can e-mail you a copy of the music printout.

Isn’t that a lovely tune though? I learned it a year or so ago by playing the CD to death! It’s one of those I’m focussing on improving. (Of course, the emphysis may appear to be on the ‘cussing’ part of that focus for a time, but I’ll get it where I want it eventually.)

Thanks MT. The Immigrant is on my list of “tunes I’ll get to soon” and I didn’t have the melody.

I love playing along with that CD too. My favorite tune to play along with has to be the Level Plain.

In my orchestra at school we have an end of year concert where all the seniors have a “senior solo.” We get to perform a song of our choice with the instrumentation of our choice. If I can find any way to get the piano part for the Level Plain, I’ll be playing it on low whistle with piano and double bass accompaniment.
