Hello everyone, my name’s Ben and I am 16. I would love to learn the Uilleann pipes as I have always been amazed by the sounds they make. I know I would have to start with a chanter and work up, but I was wondering some things if someone would be so kind to help me out.
How difficult are they to play? (I have heard very, but I was not sure)
How much do they typically cost?
Where can I get them?
How/Where can I learn to play them? (I live in Rhode Island, USA)
Read the FAQ FAQ FAQ thread on this forum. Yes, at minimum you will need at least a chanter, bag and bellows to start with. Avoid anything of Pakistani manufacture (see thread at top of this forum).
In Rhode Island, you couldn’t do any better than to talk to Patrick Hutchinson for lessons, background info, and just about more than you’d ever want to know about UPs: http://www.rhodeirish.net/music.htm
thank you very much for your help, I completely forgot to check Rhodeirish.net, haha… It’s pretty cool to see Marc Berniers name up there because Marc is one of my dads best friends… crazy guy. Anyway, thanks again!!!
Provided that the set is 100%, musicians that have learnt other instruments before even think them a bit easier to learn. The difficulty is more in garanteing those 100%.
Cheers,
Hans
