Hi all,
I’m a flute and whistle guy and I fear I’m getting the itch to try the pipes.
Where do I start and how much is it going to cost me? :roll:
In other words for those of you that speak “flute”…What is the Pipe version of an M&E polymer or Burns folk flute.
Sorry to be so vague. I don’t even know enough to ask the right questions.

Doc, start with the FAQ FAQ FAQ thread on this forum to get you started. Cruise some pipemakers’ web sites and check prices, then search this forum for people bellyaching about the cost of beginners sets.

Here’s a vague mix from what I’ve experienced myself and read here. Practice sets compared to flutes:
Tipple/Dixon (depending whether you are Brian Lee or not)=D. Daye pennychanter.
M&E/Seery = Rogge polyacetal practice set (I can recommend these from personal experience)
Burns=Pat Sky and maybe some others (a guess only)
You could try one of Desi Seery’s practice sets.

Hey Doc,
You should check out Brian’s Salt Lake Piping Page http://www.uilleann.org/ He has some great links. SLPC has been great to help those of us just starting. There are two uilleann pipers within 25 miles of your border that I am aware of and even if you don’t “move to the dark side” we still like flute/whistle players.
