I have a hard time to see how this could be a problem as I have never felt that the few FS-instrument related posts in the past have been part of any pollution problem on this forum.
Not all pipers have regular access to the internet and are therefore less likely to be part of this community. And even if they are first time poster I would still regard it as a nice gesture to offer their pipes to us before they are put out on the classifieds or Ebay.
What about all the Ebay links we get from PJ and others? Will this new policy result in that these threads get locked if the Ebay seller is not a member of C&F and have contributed with a certain number of posts?
As I’m interested in pipes I naturally think it’s great to know what’s up for sale and read comments from others regarding quality and price.
If someone logged in to sell their lawnmower I could understand your action, now I don’t.
It is ok to post a vast number of FS-threads of what other people have up for sale as long as you have been posting to the board for a year or so. But if you are new, you are not allowed to sell your own pipes.
If the pipes are up for sale on Ebay does that make it legitimate to post about the sale here?
Or are there other reasons why the FS-thread of the Hevia set was locked and other first time posters sales remain unlocked?
It isn’t about long time memebers posting their pipes for sale, it is about everyone on the net who wants to sell their pipers using this forum to do so… as it is pretty clear that the poster of the locked thread wanted to do. Again, If you want to debate this, I recommend you do so with somebody who can actually do something about it… Dale.
Hi guy, I would like to suggest a For Sale Policy thread be posted as a sticky - not this thread with all the chatter, but a single-post thread with the essential FS rules laid out in clear simple language.
Personally, I think this is the ideal place to sell UPs, as the seller is reaching a specific target audience, and isn’t getting robbed by eBay for making the sale. Obviously, the board takes no responsibility in the offers or the sales. You could also use this same thread to reiterate the Commercial Sales policy of the board, which already exists.
PJ, the greater the price of the item you sell, the bigger the chunk eBay wants of it. I only tried once, and that was a couple of years ago, but it was between 20-30% after all fees, etc. This may not be true today.
JES, actually what I meant was to just post the Rules for For Sale threads. I didn’t mean to burden you with trying to paste them all into one thread. That would also make it difficult for people to ask questions on one particular sale, or post clever witticisms, etc.
Personally, I don’t think the Ebay fees are that bad. It costs about $5 USD to list your item. I can’t put a classified ad in my local paper for that. When an item over $1,000 USD sells it costs about $28 USD plus 1.5% of the sale price over $1,000 USD. The buyer can use paypal to pay which costs another few percent. I don’t think this is unreasonable either as a merchant who takes a charge card has to pay 1-6%, dependent on the type of card, for the privilege of taking your card when you shop. All in all I think it’s a fair price for the use of their infrastructure.
I think you have that a bit backwards. For an item over $500 the basic insertion fee is $4.80 then the closing value fee (only if it sells) for items over $1000 is about $28 for the first $1000 plus 1.5% of the balance over $1000. Checkout ebay for the details. For small items the % can be near 10%, but as the value increases it gets nearer to 1.5%. You’ll pay a reserve fee if you don’t eventualy sell (if you set a reserve price) and bells and whistles add more.
If you accept paypal then you should allow about another 3% on top - more like 5.5% if you have a foreign currency transacttion.
If I’m selling a moderately priced item I usually budget 6% for ebay and paypal fees.
I’m thinking of selling a full set at some point and I may put in on e-bay with the asking price set (so no reserve fee) and take money order / check only, so it should cost a bit over 1.5% in fees. I’ll post it here also as long as it doesn’t get me into trouble.
Yes, I knew what you meant. By my way of thinking, a sticky per forum pertaining to the sale of instruments may make it a bit more convenient for the sales of these items.
I realize that it could become cluttered, but according to the rules of commercial posting ( http://chiffboard.mati.ca/viewtopic.php?t=10315 ) transactions are to be taken off forum, or by PM, thus eliminating some of that clutter.
As far as witticisms are concerned… nobody is allowed to be witty (or half witty) at any time or anywhere within the hallowed marble confines of the C&F forums.
