I’d like to put in a plug (or maybe a cork?) for Ceri Matthews’ new flute cd
called “yscolan”.
It’s a lot of straight solo unaccompanied flute (Dave Williams flute). There
are some old Welsh things on it and some new modern stuff. Info at http://www.yscolan.info/.
It sounds great! (… I’m not affiliated with Ceri, but a friend and fan!)
Thanks for posting the link. Really interesting. I like the combination of flute and spoken word. (Coming over to flute from fiddle, I keep thinking of the flute as a much more vocal instrument, song-like or speech-like in its response to breath.)
Shwmae folks. I nearly posted about this CD a few weeks back but was too shy .
Ceri played with us here in Ystradgynlais a couple of months ago and it was a great night - not just the playing (there was a great fiddler there too) but talking about the tunes. I just want to be able to get over to their sessions in Llanfihangel ar Arth one of these days.
His work with Fernhill is great–if you’ve never heard them, track down their CDs-- and he and Jonathan Shorland have done more than anybody else to revive the Welsh piping tradition.
I’m just back from one of our sessions in Llanfiangle Ar Arth - you really should come up sometime Geraint, be great to have a visitor as we are few! Oh yes - the cd is great - another first for Ceri - solo flute music from West and South Wales. I love it and am learning all the tunes I can! If you can’t make Mondays then come to the Pencader Pipe Festival (which also has fluting!) on Sept 9th - Friday night, Sat night and all day. Check out the websites. (Like Lesl I’m not affiliated - just love the music and and go to weekly lessons with Ceri)
Tangentionally CRMatthews-related… Whatever happened to Rag Foundation? They don’t seem to even have a website anymore. I miss fawning over Kate Ronconi…
