Never was flute playing so tiring

Hi there. Today I learned the reel “the Woman of the House” from Conal O Grada’s album Top of Coom (track 5, second tune). What i noticed is that, especially on the high notes on the B part (long roll on A), the man produces a particular pulsing sound, that i managed to emulate only by quickly and continuously pushing my stomac up (and back down) (a bit like after you’ve run a lot and you have to breath really fast). Now, i’m a young and fit boy that goes to gym every day, but that approach, for more than a few minutes, really kills my abdominals! I know it would just be a matter of getting used to, but i’d like to know what you folks think of it, if it’s the right way to get that sound. I hear what Conal does also in Harry Bradley’s (he does it a lot) and some other people’s playing. I think it sounds great…

You’re part way there Othannen but there are a few other (lots, rather!) things going on in Conal O’Grada’s playing.
To get near to that pulsing style you refer to in the B part of ‘The woman of the house’ you also need to be able to control the back of your throat by constricting and relaxing it in concert with your diaphragm.
There is also the embouchure control, I don’t know if you are able to pick it out by ear, there is a lot of subtle adjustment going on there (in Conal’s playing)to give a contrast between a hard edged (almost jumping octaves) and slightly softer (but still edgy) attack on the notes.
There is also the attacking of notes by pushing with the breath and cutting the lead in notes at the start of phrases.
Throw in masses of ornamentation and some virtuoso playing and you may come close to what is happening on the track you mention  .
I particularly like the pulsing style of playing too

Thanks
I figured and emulate most of what you said, emb control, attacking of notes by pushing with the breath (not as well as Conal of course), but can’t control the back of my throat…
Today i can actually use that stomac tecnique a bit better and in a slightly less tiring way than yesterday, and at least in the last few minutes my tone is louder than ever, i wonder if the two things are connected. This new power gives me head dizziness, like the first times I blowed in a flute for too long. I guess this is again a matter of getting used to…
