Depends.

If you’re talking about the N64 Zelda, it wasn’t a pennywhistle, it was an ocarina (i.e. the game was titled The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time). You can look at some Ocarinas here.

If you’re talking about The Wind Walker, I don’t think we actually see the instrument Link is using. He’s just waving around a baton.

I’m sure someone has figured out what notes the 4 directions correspond to in The Wind Walker, but I’m not that person.

Oh Good!!!

Zelda fans!!!

I haven’t played Zelda in a very long time. The N64 version. All because I can’t figure out how to get out of that damn water temple.

If someone can help me out here, I’ll actually dig out the game box and hook it back up. I only play Zelda, so there was no point in leaving it hooked up.

Help me out here…PLEEEEEEEZZZZZZZZZZZZ???

Mike

The name of the video game is The WindWaker and I did notice that they sort of borrowed off of Irish music for the soundtrack, particularly the 2 tunes played by those 2 pals of Link’s in the temples (that bird girl and the leaf-spirit kid). I think they were going for a nautical sea-chanty feel though, considering how much of the game takes place at sea.

In all likelyhood, though, the actual instrument used for the game was probably a flute or piccolo, if it were even an actual instrument. Most video game soundtracks are actually made using a synthesizer. It’s hard to tell sometimes, since they’ve gotten pretty good at making them sound fairly real these days.

ps. slowair - try this: http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/n64/game/22536.html

In A Link to the Past, he played a flute. That’s all I know because I haven’t broken down and bought any game consoles past SNES. (Yes, I know I’m a little behind.)

the ocerina wasnet the acctual insturment used on ocerina of time  i already know that im asking about windwaker, cus it has that seagoing irish sound , but what im asking is what tinwhistle would fit it the best.. like in the key of C or D or whatnot. im gonna try to get a set of every keys of the tinwhistles but im gonna try to get a really good one of the key thats on windwaker, because i loveee the music from there. and all the music is done by a MIDI synthezyser on there .. and it sounds like a mix between a flute and a tinwhistle, but all i need to know is what key of a tinwhistle would best fit it

really really thanks in advance!

I’m getting old.

I had an Atari. Does that count?

Gene, I can’t help you with which key the tune is actually in, but I can tell you that it doesn’t really matter. You can play the tune on any whistle (unless you’re trying to sit in front of the computer and match the tune). If you have learned to whistle the tune, just hunt and peck on the whistle until you get it - no matter the key, you’ll find it.

Erik

heh k thanks erik! thats pretty much what i needed to know, im gonna get a c and a d now  i am also in the coast guard.. so i live on a boat.. and when i get good these tin whistles will work well on the sea:D

Thanks for the tip Sam. Hopefully I’ll have time to get back into it. I loved Zelda. It’s not like any other video game. More of an adventure-mystery-skill game. It was just fun.

Now I’ll have to break down and get the newer game and box.

Thanks for hopefully keeping Link alive.

Mike

I’m playing through Windwaker now. I got it when it was first released but had to put it down for a few months.

Well worth it though.

Well since they’re aping the Irish sound, it’s probably in D major. The 2nd most likely candidate is G major, but you can play that on a D whistle with no problem.

Of course an Ocarina wasn’t used on Ocarina of Time. It’s all synthesizer, every last bit of it. I’d wager the same is true for WindWaker. Both actually sound more like flutes than whistles to me. Keep in mind that whistles are diatonic instruments. If the music from those games use a lot of accidentals, you’re out of luck unless you don’t mind playing a recorder or keyed flute instead.

heh cool cus i orderd 2 diffrent kinds of d’s just now  im in the coast guard and im gonna be playing ALL the zelda tunes out on the deck so everyone can hear and love it. but all the old people are gonna be “what the hell is that kid doing” muhahaha but everybody else will love it

btw, I saw an OHfishul Zelda ocarina at Song of the Sea. . .major ripoff. Its a nice enough ceramic ocarina, classy, understated coloring, priced about three times what it is worth.
