Need more Cleveland Whistlers!

This is why it sucks to live in Cleveland. I posted a few days ago regarding hitting the higher octaves. I just coulnt get them.

So I am sitting here (at work) just whistleing away and chewing on the end of my fipple or chiff or whatever the end is you blow in.

Then it happened! I swear there was an angelic light coming out of the tiled ceiling, the day seemed a little brighter, the birds sang a little louder…I sneezed into my whistle and hit a perfect F# !!! :smiley:

I wasnt blowing hard enough to get over all the squeeks!!! I could have saved DAYS of agonizing irritation and handfuls of paper towels (to clean off the whistle) if their were just someone in my area who would have told me.

Take heed all you new whistle people, accidents sometimes make things oh SO much easier in the whistle world! :thumbsup:

Actually there’s a few of us N.E. Ohioans here on the board. I’m a little too far south to be of any help, just between Akron and Canton. However, if you’ll check at your local Hibernians, many of them offer whistle classes. There’s more whistlers in Ohio than you’d imagine. Last year at Christmas it seemed as though every other church was having a Celtic Christmas celebration with at least one whistler. Plus there’s a local ensemble, the Searchlight Ensemble, that has a whistler. But do check with the Hibernians.

I’m near Dayton (20 miles eastof it) and always trying to find ITM players in the area. Anybody?

Brock Napierkowski, a fine ITM fiddle player, moved to Dayton last spring. I believe he’s been spending a lot of time hanging out with the Cincinnati-area ITM players…

Well, I suppose that Youngstown is a little too far away to hear you, but if you blow hard into a Generation G, I think I (as well as all the dogs within
an 80 mile radius) could.

Which is kind of a ‘duh.’ Of course I learn whistle. But I learn Irish music and culture and music in general.

I grew up in Norton, outside of Akron, outside of Cleveland. Does that count?

Norton? I worked there for about 8 years. I work in Barberton now. I still know quite a few folks who live in Norton.

I drove through Norton tonight, on the way to Barberton–and it wasn’t for the chicken.

Goodness, I went to grade school in Barberton! No one I ever talk to has ever heard of it. I went to good old St. Augustine’s–days I hated while I was there (I mean, what kid likes Catholic school) but which I now pine for nostalgically. I went back to visit Cleveland for a grandparent’s funeral about two years ago and made my pilgramage to the old stomping grounds. I couldn’t believe how little had changed in 20 years. Kind of nice to know some things stay relatively the same.

Akron, Canton, Barberton,Youngstown, Lodi, Dayton, Bay Village, Cleveland. Yes, for all you left-coasters out there these are not mythical places somewhere in Middle Earth. They are, however, in the middle of the country there, somewhere. It’s OK if you don’t know where they are, I don’t know where Cucamonga is either. There’s a lot of Micks who settled in NE Ohio. The majority of them came from Achill Island, County Mayo. Not me, though. I think that if we keep at it we’ll find a quorum of whistle players who can play Dawning of the Day and we will all play it together, over and over… :boggle:

So you probably spent some time around Lake Anna. They’ve put up a really nice light display around the lake for Christmas. I deliver mail in Barberton, in the Austin Estates area. Nice area, kinda like a little bit of Hudson or Fairlawn in Barberton. Good people in that town. If you ever get to visit again, check around downtown. It’s been renovated a good bit. It looks like it’s coming back into it’s own. I don’t live there, though. I’m in Canal Fulton, another nice, small town.

I saw the lights around Lane Anna. Nice. I played our annual Christmas Concert at the Barberton Library with the concert band I belong to. We play a summer concert there too. Our french horn player used to be principle horn for the Akron Symphony and lives in Barberton.

Yeah, I think Barberton is making a comeback. The additions to the high schoool are amazing.
