Perhaps; I didn’t quite get the chance to find out. Trinity did seem to be a peculiar place, though.
To be perfectly honest, my interest in that particular job was in living for a few years at least in Dublin; it had nothing to do with the range of colleagues I’d have, about whom I knew virtually nothing.
I still don’t think I know anybody who was an undergraduate at Trinity although I know quite a few who studied at University College.
According to the OED, as for licence, “licence” is the noun and “licence” is the preferred spelling for the verb, but it’s mentioned that the American spelling is usually “license.”
As for defense, the C is preferred but the S is acceptable.
And as for saying that the British spelling is somehow “old-school,” the word “defense” comes from Middle English “defens,” which is from Old French “defens” and Latin “defensum.” So it’s probably the American spelling which is “old-school.”
Just to stir things up a bit. Heh.
