Need fiddle case w/additional storage space...

I want to take up the fiddle, but I’d also like to bring my flute along with it, in the same case. It’s a 3-piece, keyless flute. Does anyone know of cases that would allow that? Most fiddle cases look to me as if the designer didn’t have the forthought to plan for anything extra other than rosin and a few papers. In addition to the extra space, I’d prefer that the case be lightweight (mostly foam, not wood).

Any suggestions?

Also, do those hygrometers that come built-in to some cases actually give an accurate reading, or are they less effective and more gimmick?

Hi,

Try a search for “rectangular violin case” on any of the major supplier’s sites. A rectangular design has a much larger compartment inside, plus they almost always have a full-sized pocket on the outside that can hold all kinds of stuff. I carry my flute and whistles in a small drummer’s stick bag that I then put inside the outter pocket of the case. Works a treat. Most of them also have three or four bow holders and come with blankets.

Here’s one by Travelite. I have their mandolin case and it’s very nice.

I have two cases with those built in hygrometers. Kind of cheap. They seem to be more gimmick than anything to me, but maybe others have had better experiences. But remember, even a good hygrometer simply measures R.H. You’ll need a humidifier to add moisture.
