Have you tried contacting Mr. Rogge yet, after all you do have a quantity of his work, perhaps he’d be willing to share his drone reed plans with you.

He speaks about all measurements of his reeds on the DVD “The Heart of the Instrument”.

Cheers,
Philipp

Got drone cane reeds from http://www.hobgoblin.com/ today. I will play hobgoblin reeds later.

Did get drone reeds from Allan Moller but wrong diameter as to narrow for drone socket. Allan will make more reeds with the correct dimension i gave him.

Will also me getting drone cane reeds from Paddy O’ Hare.

The DVD “The Heart of The Instrument” Reedmaking Masterclass gives measurments for Chanter reeds but not the drone reeds. The booklet inside the DVD case has drone reeds by Dan Dowd pages 28-29 anyone used his meaurements.

I play a Concert-Pitch-Set since 1985, since about 10 years with plastic drone reed in the bass-D - still perfect! If you want to play cane, no problem, nearly the same quality (!!!)

Bass D:

  • diameter inside: 4.3 mm
  • diameter outside: 6.5 mm
  • total lenght: 95 mm from cane at the drone side to the swinging reed end
  • reed lenght: 62 mm from bridle to the swinging reed end

Baritone D:

  • diameter inside: 5.0 mm
  • diameter outside: 4.0 mm
  • total lenght: 66 mm
  • reed lenght: 45 mm

Tenor D:

  • diameter inside: 5.0 mm
  • diameter outside: 3.0 mm
  • total lenght: 43 mm
  • reed lenght: 26 mm

Hi Christian

Thanks for the Drone Reed dimensions

Dimensions of the plastic drone reeds by Andreas Rogge I have
Tenor D:
4.9 mm ID
6.5 mm OD
45.2 mm OAL
6.5 mm drone reed seat hole inside diameter

Baritone D
49.5 mm ID
6.85 mm OD
86.5 mm OAL
7 mm drone reed seat hole inside diameter

Bass D
5 mm ID
8 mm OD
90 mm OAL
8.15 mm drone reed seat hole inside diameter

I got the hobgoblin drone reeds to work in my Rogge set. The bass and baritone work great but the wee tenor reed cuts out.
I found a spare cane drone reed in my reed box that I made for my old C snakewood set. I just needed to cut reed shorter length roll/snap tongue. Now I have all cane drone reed in my pipes.

More cane drone reeds to come from Paddy O’Hare and Allan Moller.

Cheers

If it cuts because of too much pressure its easy to bend it a little bit to increase the spring power. I hold it down at the point where it is connected to the cane with the thumb and bend it away from the seat about 5 mm until it is slightly more open and until it stays open during playing. Worst case is to put in a thin hair.

first spread a bit:

if this doesn’t help put in a hair:
