Need a flute name!

Let me first apologize: This is not a question about an Irish flute, but an Asian flute, though it may turn out to be much of the same.
I have searched the internet for a long time to find the name of a special flute used in many Asian-inspired movie soundtracks. I haven’t had any luck finding other kinds of music with this instrument – it’s rather hard to find music if you don’t know the name of the instrument!
The following link contains a little piece of film music with the flute:

I’ve heard from friends that it is a sort of bamboo flute, but they couldn’t tell me the name of it.
My guess is, that it’s some kind of bamboo transverse flute (because of the ability to make overtones), but I don’t have any experience in this subject at all.
So does anybody know the name of this flute?[/url]

Sure sounds like a Shakuhachi to me. It’s tough to tell with all those ‘wet’ effects.

Yeah, I’m sorry about the effects. It was the best piece I could find… :stuck_out_tongue:

I have thought about a Shakuhachi, but after listening to different music samples I don’t think it’s the right sound.
Also I find it hard to imagine how to make overtones with a Shakuhachi. But as I said, I’m quite inexperienced in this area of music.

It sounds like a shakuhachi to me, but it could be a Shinobue.

Here’s a name: The wonkiedog tourbillion-flautus pookumgunggiehandflute. how’s that?

Hmm… Yeah, it could be a shinobue… I’ll try to find more information about this flute.
And if both of you think it could be a shakuhachi maybe I should try to dig a little more into this instrument.

Thanks for your replies!

This might be some help.

My vote is for shakuhachi, too, though it’s hard to tell from that clip.

Here’s a sample of shakuhachi playing that illustrates that the instrument can be pure-sounding, or full of overtones, or just sound like wind in the (well-tuned) rushes:

It’s played on a plastic shakuhachi. I’ve considered buying one of these, but it’ll have to wait for a while.

I’ve played – or tried to play – bamboo shaks; it’s a challenging instrument, but beautiful.

Huh.

Just saw this thing on that web page, too. A whistle-head sort of dealie-bob to take all that embouchure work out of the shakuhachi (and probably remove a lot of the expressiveness, too, but there’s always a trade-off, ain’t there?).

Turn your plastic shak into a quasi-native american flute.
