narrow bore D

Hi all,
I was wondering if there was anyplace online or any CD’s where I might hear a narow bore D chanter? Who makes a good narrow bore D nowadays with a reasonable wait (i.e someone besides Wooff)?
Thanks
J

I see new for 2003, Ray Sloan
http://www.raysloan.com/
is advertising narrow bore D chanters.

Davy Stephenson also makes narrow bore D chanters. www.bagpipeworks.com

Try Brad Angus Washington state …he sells through Artichoke Music! He does nice work! I have a Narrow Bore D from him that I am satisfied with except for the fingering on the c nat is a bit odd to get used to …but otherwise great set and service.

What fingering are you using ?

Just like a whistle A and G fingers down 0xx0000…I play whistle so its not hard but I forget about whistle when I play pipes. Has anyone else experienced this??

Try this:
T O X X X O X X

Consider yourself lucky if your Cnat takes that fingering. Depending on the reed, several of chanters I’ve owned use the xOXX XOOX fingering which is harder to land when playing faster reels. I like reed/chanters that take a xOXX OXXX best. The more fingers you can leave down, anytime, the more desirable.

Joe Kennedy will also do narrow bore if you ask, as he is very big on the sweeter sound of narrow bore and flat sets. I can’t speak to his waiting list, though.

Tony..that is the conventional fingering for Cnat.??..I have tried all variations and the only one that works is TOXXOOOO. Its not something I cant live with…everything else works fine and the chanter has a mellow sweet sound although more nasal than the concert pitch. Aside from above I find it easier to play as well.

Conventional? I’ve seen it on a few charts.

It’s the fingering I’ve been using for all my chanters (including the Wooff narrow bore D) What else have you tried?

Try the fingerings Lorenzo suggests that might be what you’re looking for.

The

xOXXXOOX

works best on my chanters… get’s more of a singing tone imo. I have also come across chanters that have had to be fingered

xOXXOOXX

to keep them in tune… different bore styles I suppose.

PD.

Really? I thought the Cnat was xxox xxxo… that’s what I’ve been using, and thought was standard?!

Edited, see new post below. I wrote it out wrong! Duh! Thanks Patrick!

No… when we write xOXXXOOX the back d is the small “x” on te left the first “O” is the C# hole etc… what you were writing would probably get something between B and C but not exatly Cnat???

PD.

Pratrick,
on my narrow bore “D” hunter design chanter xoXXXoXX
on my Rowsome Concert"D" chanter design xoXXooXX

Hi Stew,
If you don’t mind me asking, do you still have your 1/2 set by Davy Stephenson, what way did you play Cn on the Stephenson chanter, was it the same as the Hunter. I’m assuming it would be as Davy Stephenson was trained by Peter Hunter, but I’m probably wrong.

Cheers, Mac

P.S. How’s the Website coming on,

My apology,

Sorry Patrick on spelling your name wrong no harm ment I’ve
have two cortorzone injections in my elbow today and
it’s left me a bit do lally tap honestly no harm ment its
taken me all my time to get the fingering of C nat right
or is it I’ll try again tomorrow. :sunglasses:

Mac,
your absolutely right it is the same since the chanters are nearly
Identical, but I like my Rowsome better the set has had some changes,
the site is nearly there some pictures of my new work shop is on my
site going to Ireland in the next few months so I’ll wait till I come
back before I put it up on the net still need some permission on some
of the pictures I want to use. :sunglasses:

That’ll be a first for me
Did you say you were going to put up pictures of sets by different makers as a kind of gallery? Do you use your Rowsome chanter with your Stephenson 1/2 set? did you make changes to the Drones/chanter to get them to work together. I noticed some guys use one makers chanter and anothers Drones/Reg’s. I thought that maybe doing that would just require the reeds (Chanter/Drones/Regs) set to play at the same pressure, I suppose it’s not that simple. Look forward to seeing your site, enjoy your trip to Ireland.

Cheers, Mac
