I’ve been playing various parts of the Fox Chase for a few years. There are a number of well known versions, notably those by Ennis, Rowsome, Felix Doran, Finbar Furey and Liam O’Flynn.
Has anyone managed to name the individual tunes which are played. The only two name of which I’m reasonably certain are the hornpipe an Maidrin Rua, and the slow air, the Lament for the Fox.
Keating Hyland composed the Foxchase as one piece in itself, with the song of the Maidrin rua as starting point, AFAIK but people have added separate tunes to their versions. Ennis, for example, used a version of the Hare in the corn, that he got from Johnny Doherty playing the Hare and the hounds
And, obviously, you have the Foxhunter’s jig to finish, although Ennis’ two part version in G is the tune of a children’s song, Nead Na Lachan
