Where stays, the U.S.A.? Canada?
Matt Cranich still plays fiddle; Tomas O Canan (sp?) I believe has retired from UCC but still plays uilleann pipes; and I can’t remember the third member for the life of me.

Na Fili were popular in the mid to late 1970s having started in around 1968 or 69. There is no publication date on a couple of the LPs I have. But Na Fili 3 was issued around 1973 or 4, their final LP The Chanters Tune was around 1979. Matt Crannich went on to form Any Old Time then Sliabh Notes. Tomas O’Cannain has written books about Irish music and tune books, he still performs occasionally. Tom Barry was a teacher and I presume continued with that career when the group broke up.

Na Fili was a familiar name, and I found that they’re on an old cassette that someone recorded for me. Beyond that I can’t add anything.
What does happen to old traditional musicians?
They don’t die, they just … ?

Well, as of November, Tomás was alive and well at 75ish and hauling his pipes across the Atlantic for a mutual friend’s wedding (the duffel bag as pipe-case was a nice touch). And he seemed to be having a great time.
(He also writes murderously good poetry.)
So I think life goes on … probably a lot like when your kids grow up.
Edited to add: Tomás was the piper in Na Fili.
Tomás Ó Canninn (Tom Canning) is a very old friend of mine (since the 1960 ies) and the only one I really know from Na Filí (the poets - lit.)
Tomás has a web site - worth a look anyway - with links including a telephone number. He is a most helpful and friendly man, I am sure he will be happy to point you in the right direction.

I only met him over the course of a long weekend but had the privilege to talk to and have a few tunes with him, and he really is one of the neatest people I’ve ever met. Thank you for the story and Na Filí translation, Tony, and all best to Tomás and Helen!
OK, Angel, it’s decided. You need to talk to the man.
I wanted to SOOO me him when I was in Cork in 2003. Chair of engineering and Music at the same time from what I understand. My daughter was doing junior year abroad and picked UCC. One of her roomies was a music major that did some science and we wound up talking about Tomas one afternoon. He was suprised I knew who Tomas was. I bought one of his later CDs and a music book at Ossian’s. One of the tunes was the “Z-transform reel” or some such thing. I thought " anyone who would write a piece of music about a math function is one odd puppy-I need to go meet him!!"
Oh, I wish you had met him! He’s a riot – and one of the most brilliant people I’ve ever met (in a dry, understated and completely unassuming Old-World sort of way, of course).
He was over here for a friend’s wedding in November; I think he and his wife Helen were ad hoc “godparents away from home” for my friend while he was at UCC; there’s a whole lot of affection there.
Anyway, Tomás is one of the most advanced humans I’ve ever known (he’s also a first-class poet, Supreme Bard of the Fleadh, no kidding) - they don’t make many like him. I’ve got a great picture of us all on my office wall, and smile whenever I see it - he made an impression on me that will last a lifetime.
He still runs the session at the Heron in Cork, so if you go again soon, try to get over there.
He’s a treasure of a person. I’d like to grow up like that.
I have just received a copy of Thomás’s double CD of Slow Airs. Its a fantastic reference to Irish Music and a fantastic bargain at 15 Euros (about $18 ) plus postage.
There are 122 - thats right! One Hundred and twenty two airs on these two cds. I have seen a lot of people asking for sources for new tunes on these boards - this is one of the best sources I have come accross, at least for the slow airs.
Yes Tom is all you say, but I am sure he would be quite uncomfortable reading this sort of outporing of praise. My interest in Irish music is recent, only a few years. My friendship with Tom stems from the mid sixties and was through ham radio, he was a very keen ham. I now regret that I did not have the benefit back then of contact with his music.
